According to Les White of American Honda, Honda wilL reconsider the plan when and if very specific proposals are offered. "We're not sure it won't look like we're trying to take advantage of a bad situation. We're not sure how some guy witho'ut enough heating oil in the snow in Idaho is going to feel about seeing an ad saying how much fun it is to ride a motorcycle in the woods, if that is included in the program." Honda is not willing to stick out its corporate neck until it sees what it is getting into. The other five manufacturers went ahead without Honda and formed a commi ttee to develop the proposal. Honda, according to White, is not particularly concerned about what advertising programs anyone else may come up with. He is sure the Honda ad people will continue to develop ad campaigns that meet Honda's own needs. It seems that the idea of a solid coordinated effort by the "Big Six" manufacturers to promote bikes in the face of the current situation will never become real action. • What You Can Do... Write some letters, but follow these guidelines for maximum effectiveness. Remember, a letter that does not contain any constructive information is as bad as no letter at all. Content, not sheer existence, counts. Pick out a target (or more than one) from the list below and. write him (them) a letter. Point out that A) Executive Order 11644 recogilized recreational motor vehicle use as an integral part of our society, B) that the small relative savings in gasoline realized from a ban on such use w~uld be far offset by the tremendous negati"" effect on the economy (due to lost jobs, less spending, etc.), and C) how much money you spend each year 0':1 things related to such use. Continue by saying you support Barry M. Goldwater Jr.'s amendment to HB 11450. Also tell him (or them) that street motorcycles should be exempted from any gasoline rationing plans because of their high gas mileage. Remember, the very last thing you want to do in your letter is get very indignant and call names, because such letters are usually just ignored. Keep calm and rational in your letter, and you just might do a lot of good. Good luck! PRESIDENT RICHARD M.
