Maybe several if you took in to account the In the dirt, on the asphalt or just around the block, the cycle-Cross Tank gives you more than authentic moto·cross looks or a handy billboard to trick up with decals. A buddy of ours, Mike Capalite, who admits he1s too old to race anymore (Ha, he just always fmishes things like the Greenhorn, the Check Chase or Barstow to Vegas) entered and had his share of jollies. He rides a Kawasaki, complete with all the enduro equipment on it, which immediately caused an Expert on the line b'eside him to try and get his handlebars in front of Mike's thinking he'd be a push-over. Mike agreeably let him do it, seeing the Expert was on a Bul. You guessed it. Capalite just fired up the 'Saki, put her in gear and then shut her off and when, the banner dropped, kicked once and shot off in a tremendous start with the other chap standing beside his bike kicking away: It's little things like that that just make your day if you're a racer. Mike also had the added attraction of . wondering what would be awaiting him at each. gas pit. Would it be his wife Effie who always pits alone for him on these big ones with the gas or, would it be Rescue Three and Effie busily delivering an heir who was overdue? It was always the gas but never let it be said that anything stands in the way of a racer riding his race. I won't dwell on the loss of Larry Pfutzenreuter. It's not every day a rider comes along who makes Number One in his first year of competition as Larry did. We'll all miss him, he was a great guy, and he was doing what he loved best. The bike I was waiting for the Cheney-BSA to be ridden by Mike Jack,.," didn't rna < the trip across the herring pond for the event. Mike is bereft but the truth is Eric Cheney couldn't get his spanners turning fast enough to get the machine over here on time. Mike also had to miss the Laugh-In Trials which I think probably caused him more anguish. He takes perverse delight in laying out the traps to trap us struggling members of 'the press and then looking innocent if anyone compares the sections to the Scottish Six Days Trail. Just getting from one section to the other at Saddleback can make the hair stand up unller your helmet. In case you didn't catch the little bit in this paper a couple of weeks ago, all of us who didn't buy stickies will be caught by July first of next year. Now let's not have any nonsense that if free thinkers like me had bought stickies the new legislation wouldn't have been necessary and that we caused it. That's nonsense. The way this country is going today they are taxing or taking away from the average citizen every blooming thing they can think of. A fellow rider who had the experience of losing his stickie when a fender came off when he looped it and then had' to pay extra to get it replaced has taken his small personal stand by putting the new one in a place that's going to cause whoever checks him .over a bit of neck bending to see it. Still, to try and maintain my sense of humor, wouldn't it be nice if the DMV paid con tingency money to winners of big cars races, including Indy and On because they'll carry green stickies! Talked to any dirt bike shop o~ers lately? They are really feeling the pinch, what with the desert restrictions and now the' fuel crisis. The shops who sell road machines will no doubt go the other way as people will start tootling around on bikes and leaving their barges at home when there's not enough gas to run them (me included). Then we'll all fmd out how good the service and factory representation is on the various brands. It wasn't too long ago when it was one of the things to do to ride your bike to the local scrambles, take off the headlight, race it, and ride it home. Don't laugh, you real young 'uns, it could happen again! • tarie. An answer, not an echo WESTERVILLE, OHIO, NOV. 20 Acting AMA Executive Director Ed Youngblood, .in a recent letter to President Nixon, cites motor· cycles as "an energy crisis answer." Youngblood endorsed Adminis· tration efforts to solve the:: energy dilemma and noted that the more than twelve million motorcycle owners are al ready making a significant contribution to the fuel conservation effort. Noting that the average motorcycle obtains 30 to 40 miles per gallon, and that some small machines may easily nretch that figure to over 50, the chief executive of the world's largest motorcycle service organization catled two-wheelers "the most economical fo=- of personal transportation in the United States today." •
