CMCMX ~~~ Mote"7Ch "e By John Bethea 1.ltIes IRWINDALE, CAL., NOV. 30 Box $), Chabworth.. Calilornla 91311 Teiephone (213)340-8470 It was the season ender and it had alI the hoopla you'd expect 1'or the occasion. A big turnout of riders welcomed some new faces to the motocross scene: members of the four-wheel press and a few of the best pro fuel drag racers. Believe it, they got it on! The elbows and handlebars game. Elsinore TT Scrambles Story & Photos by Gary Jones ELSINORE, CAL., Dl;C. 2 What started as a pretty dreary weekend turned out to be one of the best I've had the pleasure of enjoying in a long time, thanks almost entirely to the fme people and great racing I saw today. The first go out and get it on were the guys from the Combined Lightweight classes. Taking first overall in the 100 Combined was Vince Mead (Kaw). Taking the 125 Combined was a little fellow you've. heard about before and will undoubtedly hear more about in years to come, Mike Tidwell. It was my first time seeing him. Now I know why I stopped racing. These young guys don't have any idea what fear is. In the 175-200 Combined it was Hal Cheetwood scoring on a Bultaco. Moving to the 250 class we saw how consistency can payoff. After taking the first two moto~ and leading the third on the last lap, Jeff Kerrs went into the first tum too hot and lost it. Following Jeff and placing second in the first two races was .Jerry Ellison, still Somebody's out of numerical order. behind Jeff when he slipped. Jerry therfore was the winner of the last moto and the overall. In the 250 Amateur event it was that fearless twelve-year old again, Mike Tidwell, taking all three motos. Taking the 250 Expert class was Charles Soderstrom. Going into the 350-500 Novice-Amateur class, we saw Joe Flores take a second and two firsts for the overall win. In the 500 Novice class it was William Arbough scoring the winning points. The 350-590 Experts class put on some rapid racing. Taking the flag at the finish was Mike Myers. • Results: 100 2. Of the Press/Manufacturer class, Popular Hot fiod's George Elliott (who also happens to be the editor of Popular Cycling), put the crunch on the crowd, winning .a11 three motos easily and stuck around the track, literally, to show the pro racers how to ride, too. Fred Mooneyham won that grouping with Don Moody showing some hotdog style for second. As it should be, all three Expert classes were closely contested, despite the fact that Dave Pessy walked off with the overall 125 and 250 wins with five out of six moto victories on the factory Hondas. In the first two 125ers, recent pro transfer David Taylor (Yam) blasted around everyone in the first turn and came up short- in second place, but con tin ued to pressure Pessy all the way. But, in the finale while Pessy ran away, Taylor made a miscue and wound up sixth and that gave David Williams (Pen) the opportunity to take over second on points. Honda-mounted Dave Eropkin rounded out the class of Davids. In the 250's, Bill Rubly (Pen) won the first moto and that spoiled Pessy's hopes for a six-for-six night. When Dave won the second and Bill took second, that set up a tie heading for the final in which Pessy notched his 31st overall of the year via a win while Rubly couId only manage a third. Tony Rogers (Mai) took a second and added to his second moto third, it still could only total a fourth as he failed to score in the first race when he Was clobbered after crashing by John McManaway unavoidably on lap one. There Was a different story in the 500's, but no new names. Joe Johnston (Mai) and Tim Lunde (Mai) locked horns for the third week in a row and this week it went in favor of Tim, who broke the two moto tie with the victory in the third race. Cliff Lett (Hon) used two frrsts and a third to lock up the 125 Intermediates overall in his favor. Gary Denton (Yam) took second overall despite a final moto 10th. The battle for the overall 250 Intermediate crown left third place way behind. Morgan Malocco (Yam) cashed in the chips witl> wins in the first two rounds, then contributed a fourth to come up with a 969 winning score over Scott Doornbos (Hon), whose 4-2-1 was just one position and 100 points shy. Dave "Curly" Wholey (CZ) kinda made shambles of the 500 Intermediates this week, sandwiching a second in between two moto victories while Jeff Witherell (CZ), his closest overall foe, spen t much of his time battling with other contenders. Being it was the season finale, the Junior turnouts were pretty well stuffed which provided for some Rood, tiRh t action. • Results ~ress/Manufacturers: 1. George Elliott (Mall. 2.
