AMC Ccrlsbad By Thew Asp CARLSBAD, CAL., NOV. 17 In a fairly recent song that I heard on the radio the lyrics go - "i t never rains in California", Well man, I don't know where they were, but down in Carlsbad it was like the forty day rain that almost sunk Noah's Ark. In practice, the riders didn't know whether to ride the course or to don wet suits, face mask, and air tanks, and try to swim for it. 1 was surprised to find that not a single person found a fish out there! Anyway, everybody seemed to really dig playing in the mud like the Europeans do so frequently in their home countries. To all of you guys that are always complaining about this track . and that track being so dusty that you can't see your front wheel, and so-and-so course is like an asphal t freeway at rush hour, then brothers, you got to come out to Carlsbad in the rain and take a peak around. Race one was the Open Beginner, Novic, Junior, Experts (combined), and the 250 Intermediates. Running away with this race was Bill Booth on one of the more recent Kawasaki 450's. He was heavily pursued by CZ rider, Dennis Kantor (250 Expert) and then by Honda mounted Bryan Porter (125 Expert). All three of these riders took first in their classes for the day. First place in the Open Novice class was Steve Rivara on his semi-trick CZ. Steve rode one .hell of a race except for his constant sliding in the mud, but then again, so did everyone else for that matter. First place in the Open Junior group was a speedy little devil named Ken Martin (CZ). Finally in the 250 Intermediate classit was the Husky of John Curtis who surprised both his class and the spectators with a half lap lead over second place winner, Robert Dykmans (CZ) and third place finisher (another CZ), Tom Pearl. In the 250 combined it was Dave Doss (Hus) who stomped on his rival, Russ Wilson (Suz) in every moto. In the Novices it was quite a battle for first between Ron Ward (Hon) and Dale Luedtke (Yam). For a while it looked as if Ward had it made in the shade but just at the last moment Luedtke struck back with an overwhelming vengence in his heart and defeate,d his opponent much to his glee. Taking third was another fine rider, Jeff Vallon (Yam). As for the Beginners, they never stood a chance as Husky rider, Chuck MacDonald, overcame the opposition with a great deal of style for a beginner. Second place beginner was Yamaha mounted Joe Bauer while in third it was Jeff Houts (Hon) taking the trophy. The third race of the day was the 125 Junior, Novices, and Beginners. In the Junior class it was Mike Tague on a CZ who led all three classes for a outstanding first place. This kid has fantastic style. The Novice class was won· by Honda mounted Willie Amaradio with second place being awarded to Dan Hendricks (Mon) and third going to Ii ttle John Chambers on a Suzuki. The first place Beginner was awarded to a newcomer to AMC, Mike Guin who was riding his new Suzuki for the first time in a race. That's quite a feat if you ask me. Second place went to Kurt Luedtke, also on a Suzuki and third to Mike Yada (Hon), an AMC Saturday regular. So if you people are sick and tired of those dust eaten, asphalt holes in the ground or you just want to try the track for the hell of it, then corne out to AMC Saturday Motocross races at Carlsbad Raceway and you'11 have more fun than you've had in a long time! • ,r If you have been saving your bucks to buy a true competitive dirt machine ...
