This week Puyallup Raceway held their usual weekend race program but they were already preparing for next week's Trans-Am. In operation for the first time was a Preston Pettx. starting gate that operated flawlessly and was never outwitted by the riders. Lots of sand has been mixed into the dirt and prOVed its worth as the track was deluged by rains for a week before and during most of the day. The surface got slick on the hills but it never mucked up enougb to swallow a bike. Racing was not adversely affected by the rain or track conditions. Th e almost 400 riders moved through the 25 moto program quickly with no delays. Running behind 100 A rider Alex Raphael, Steve Eyler won both of his 100 B motos. Alex's brother Micah turned a third and second into second overall in the B class winning the battle against Mike Lunsden when Mike dropped his bike in a muddy tum. Eyler went on to win his 125 heat but finished third in the second moto. Doug Taylor won the class with a first in his heat (four heats were run sending the top eight of each to the second moto) and an easy fIrst in the second moto. Roger Unger grabbed the early lead in his 250 B heat and the second moto, but he was unable to hold it over the long run. Brian Finch came hack in the last moto to beat Unger and have enough points for first overall in a tight class. Phil Larson won both heats of the Open B but Jeff Lunore was on his tail-pipe all the way. After the B's run in the morning the A's came out in the afternoon rains. Mitch Simmons, getting in all the practice he can for the Support class next week, won both the 125 and Open class. In the fIrst 125 moto Doug Rains, the eventual winner of the 250 class, kept Simmons on his hip hut then he chalked up a DNF for the second moto. In the Open class Simmons ran second most of the first mota. Most of his trouble came from 'Mike Guthrie, an up and coming charger who lacks consistency but not style and speed. Simmons won the first mota but .lost the second to Crandle. Doug Raines rode the first 250 Penton in the area to victory in its first race. Buck Murphy, another local who will run Support next week, won the fIrst moto on an XL four stroke mounted in an Elsinore frame with ease while Raines eame off a bad start to battle with Kaetesner over second place on the last laps. Murphy's bike fouled before the second mota began. He borrowed another bike, won the last moto, but was disqualified for using a second bike. Murphy knew this but wanted to ride anyway. Raines with a third and first edged out Kaetestner for first overall. Note that Secret Squirrel placed third; That is his name. Pit stop, pit stop, she'd wait for me under my umbrella...
