It feels just great to be number one again. Thanks to my uncle Harlan and Dad for tuning my bikes all season and making it possible for me to win the final. They als" sponsor and tune the bike that my teammate Larry Shaw rides, who finished a fme third place in the final this year. My brother Steve, who fmished second in the California State Final, and second in the Nations point standings, had a bit of bad luck in this year's championships and could only finish founh. I am sure he would have ( done much better, but in his first heat he made a bad trap and had to work hard for a seeond'in that heat. It seems that whenever you do bad in the fust heat of a fmal you lose your confidence for the rest of the nigh t, and it takes a lot of concentration and determination to bring yourself back up again. Mike Curoso Goes Well Second in this year's final was Mike Curoso, who went very well that night as well as all season. 1 think a lot of people thought Mike was going to win it after his first ride of the night when he won going away, looking very fast and relaxed. Being able to relax yourself while you're racing is half the battle of going fast. Then in his second heat he was against myself, Rick Woods, reigning champ, and Bill Cody. I made the gate and won the race, with Mike coming in second. After running second in my first heat and winning the second, Curoso and myself were tied wi th five poin ts apiece. Then in my next heat 1 was against Shaw, and 1 won and he came in fourth. This hurt Shaw for the title but he still finished a good third with two more w.ins. So as the meeting progressed Curoso fini8hed second once more to Shaw, and 1 won my next three heats to take the title with 14 points, Curoso second with 13 points, Larry Shaw third with 12 and brother Steve with .11 points. Arriving in Australia Four days after the U_S. final Steve and myself left for Australia for a three month tour of Speedway. After 19 hours of flight time we arrived in Sydney on Nov. I, 1973. at 2:30 p.m. and believe it or not we immediately left for a town called Newcastle. This was about a three hour trip by car, so the promoter packed us in his car and off we went for a meeting that night in Newcastle. The tracks here are all 1,4 mile tracks or bigger, our horne track in Sydney is a 1/3 mile track. The gate is very important on the big tracks, probably _even more so that our smaller tracks. The reason the start is so important here is that if you get behind on the start the dirt is so thick and wet that it is difficult to see where you are going. You must pass mainly on the outside because there is no dirt on the inside of the track to get bite from. Plus the fact that at the end of the Sydney .traight you hare hitting 84 MPH, and if you dive for the pole there is a good chance of drifting into another rider. So you must make your bid to pass on the outside near the fence. This is unlike most tracks in America, where the top speed is about 45 MPH. It is easier to pass on the inside because the tracks are so tight that if the rider in front of you drifts jU8t a little, you can cut it short and pass !lim 011 the inside. But the start is still very important. Usually if a top rider makes five good starts, he will win five straightraces. Borrowed Bikes So when we finally got to Newcastle Speedway, we had to borrow two bikes because our bikes were still on the boat to Syndey. The bikes weren't bad but still not quite to our liking, because of the bars, etc. bu t they didn't run bad. After a bit of getting used to the large tracks we managed to make it to the final. The final race consised of Greg Kentwell, Robbie Blackadder, Steve and myself. Steve made the gate from the pole as I came off last from three, but I just couldn't split the two Aussies. But Steve went on to win the final. The track at Newcastle was very good, a bit heavy on the outside but all in oJl good to race on. The crowd for the meeting was about 9,000, which blew my mind. Hopefully it will get this big in the States soon. I'd better go see about getting my bikes off the boat now for a meeting at Brisbane this weekend. Cheers to all and sec ya next week. • eRe Team Race By The Shadow STODDARD VALLEY, CAL., OCT. 28 Visiting the desert for the last Sunday of the month, the California Racing Club found Stoddard Valley much to its liking, with a turnout of 127 teams on hand for the second CRC Team Race.
