CMC at Carlsbad ..:I By John Bethea E CARSLBAD, CAL., NOV. 11 Rex Staten rode both the 250 and 500 Experts in CMC action at Carlsbad Raceway. That takes care of the action in those classes. In the 125, well, welcome another winner to the CMC pro lists: Rick Sheren. In his four motos, rapid Rex collected four race victories. T!lis means that in his last nine CMC Sunday class starts, he has a total sum of nine in a row. If that ain't a CMC record, it is pretty close and remember, the streak is still alive. Next week, Rex heads to Phoenix for a non-biggie but was given word this week that come time for the Carnegie Trans-AM, he's got a slot on the starting grid in the International set. Watch for him to surprise a bunch of people, but not this reporter. Rick Sheren's glory, justified as it is in his first ever win in CMC pro ranks, was somewaht out of the spotlight. Winning is all important, that's true in the motocross game - or any game but case in point: Rick did not win a moto (Consistency, a clue to next season, paid ofL), and a broad-shouldered "Southerner" from 'San Diego did. His name? Billy Urban. Two-year-old veterans should remember that name. In 1971, Billy Urban set a still standing CMC record of 35 Expert wins. He earned the CMC o. 1 plate that year and nobody has ever come close to that win total. Billy won his last CMC moto back in early 1972. He won his next today. What this means is this: Billy Urban is back. HJ won a moto!" be exclaimed at the payoff. "It fecls good." And ShereD! He won it and that's what counts. Congratulations and welcome to the CMC circle! Two factory Suzuki riders from Japan tried their hand at CMC racing and did pretty well. Tosltiaki Kakamata took second 250 In termediate desphe an attack of falsies. In the first moto, yet worked up to second. Frank Fitzgerald (Hus), riding his Itrst Intermediate race swept the class while turning out lap times reportedly nearly identical to those of the Experts. Kazumasa Kamo was the other foreign rider and he swept the 100 Juniors. Actually, AMA flat-tracking star John Sperry rode in this race and won all three, but he signed up as an Intermediate and rode "just for fun" with the Juniors. He was at Carlsbad with the Suzuki clan. Ben Francis (Hon) took second. James Russell (CZ) whipped Steve Roach (CZO for top honors in the 500 F mighty to Murray, Cycle' News has nall--first! rOOl . .,.,< . .J iL ~i '~'. _, . " .
