1973 Trans-AMA 55 -=-naIe The best riders America has to offer. Battling it out with Europe's finest. National and world champions. Factory racing bikes. Doing the first turn boogie at Carlsbad. mere 12 digits in that division. John Atwood (BuI) and Rich Kastner (Bul) fmished out the 250 Senior overall stadnings in second and third. Mike Foreman (Hon) showed the 125 Juniors some excellent techniques in capturing overall honors in that division. Mike took the fll'St and second motos with ease, but a grand slam was in doubt in the final event when a bad start left him looking at the backs of five determined spoilers. Mike recovered one place each lap, un til he was leading at the half·way mark. He went on to win it all, going away. The Carlsbad curves generated many sweeps in the day's races. Nancy Daggs (Yam) did it in the Powder Puff event. So did Jim Cote (Hon) in the Mini group. All of the overall winners in the big·bore swept the track clean. It was Beginner Harold Phillips and Junior Chuck Enscoe aboard CZ's, and Senior Jeff Wecker did it on a Kawasaki 500. The 250 lntermediates stacked their fmish in exceptionally orderly fashion. Rick Lansford (Mai), Tim Fox (CZ), and A.C. Middleton (CZ) came in 1-2-3, , in motos 1·2-3, for an overall standing in the same order. • Malone plays at home By Tom Corley TUSTIN, CAL., NOV. 2 While Btuce Baron split to race in a big money Trans-Am race in Texas on the expense account of Orange Coun ty Cycle, his teammate Morris Malone played the role of the fastest 250 Expert in Orange Bowl of Motocrossin'! Malone accelerated off the first moto line with his Yamaha YZ and led Rich Grafton (Hon), Bryan Justice (CZ), Doug Raines (Pen) (who came down from Belfair, Washington to 'cross against the Southern Californiana), and David Johnson (Suz). Second moto shotgun positions were sold to Malone and Grafton and then it was time for the resident of Washington to make his move. Doug Raines must be hot on his local tracks 'cause on his big-bore P,en ton he won agains t Grafton and Malone, who are two of the best at O.C.I.R. But when the scorers reached the overall points it was a Malone, Grafton, Raines, Justice and Johnson finish in a great 250 Expert race. What looked like what would turn out to be a fast and smooth 125 Junior an d i n termediate race after two competitive motos ended up as instant replays 'cause they bad to fire off three starts in the last moto! The first start ended wben a pile-up on the lover's leap jump happened. So they did it again and this time racers ate it in front of the starting line, so they' black flagged it. Finally they had a decent start that got the show on the road, yet they all hauled and no one was any more cautious! It started out as a Kevin Crawford-Brad Dutoit race in the 125 Intermediate class but then things changed with a Crawford (Pen), Mike Perry (Pen) and Rob Irwin win. The fll'St three 125 Junior racers were Fred Miller (Hon) over Amos Deacon and Kevin Tidball who both raced Pentons.
