CRC at Indian Dunes By The Shadow Photos by Old Shady and John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., ocr. 28 When all was said and done here on Sunday, the big news had to be the simple fact the "Flyin' Hawaiian", pineapple king of the local area and much of the United States, is back. John DeSoto, mounted on a CZ, returned to action in style at Indian Dunes on Saturday, as the California Racing Club of Riverside hosted an outstanding turnout on the Shadow Glen course. After a layoff due to injury, DeSoto raced his way to a comfortable and impressive victory over the Open Expert class. When asked bow he felt after the race, DeSoto commented he was still "stiff," but would be hitting the In ternational circuit shortly, "probably at Houston." As far as we were concerned, DeSoto looked anything but "stifr', while he was on the track, racing his way to an extremely impressive first place. After the race, DeSoto donated his trophy to Guy Barber (CZ), who fInished in fIfth place in the 250 Novice, Division Two encounter. Normally, Barber, who was returning to racing after a four-month layoff with a broken knee, would not have received atrophy, but DeSoto's donation made the trophy for Bauer a reality. Following DeSoto across the fInish line at Open Expert was Kendall Watson (Mai), who looked like an excellent candidate for the future Ubig times". At 250 Expert, Henry Saunders (Yam), captured the overall victory in a red-hot race. Second place went to fast-rising Steve Miller (Hon), while third place was taken by Ron DeSoto (CZ). A bitter battle at 125 Expert between Steve Merkel (Bul), and Richard Williams (Pen). came to a close on the final moto. Going into the first moto, Merkel and Williams were tied at 700-all. Merkel won the final race while Williams dropped back to third place. As for the Intermediate competition, Jim Kemp (CZ), raced his way to a fIrst overall at Open Intermediate, and Martin Tajra (Yam), did likewise at 250 Intermediate. Kemp took a grand-slam victory, while Tajra took a close, victory. • Why 'are they smiling? Why are they wearing the weird hat? What difference does it make? I It makes a big difference.
