DEUVERANCE. c<"l ...... ... ClJ ..0 E ~ o Z Phil Moon overdoes it at Irwindale. by Steve Parker Photos by Dennis Greene Irwindale. Nov. 1 The first annual Irwindale Invitational Handicap Speedway Meet is over, officially closing out the Southern California Speedway season's regular races for another year. The idea was a new one. They ran 25 events of handicap first division racing only, with each rider mounting the bike five times during the evening. A total of 25 points was possible, with five points beit)g given for a first place finish, four for fourth, and so on down to one point for last place. There were a few problems that stood in the way of the nigh t being a total success. Many of the racers complained about the track. Even though it was different for Irwindale, being dry and dusty instead of the usual wet condition, most riders said that the promoters still haven't mastered the art of track preparation at Irwindale. After even number five, the lights on the track went out for about an hour. While announcer Bruce Flanders tried valiantly to fiU in with everything from witty sayings to an interview with Scott Autrey, a lot of the crowd left and tempers in the pits were reaching a high point. With the Bast brothers already in Australia, a number of other riders got a chance to show their stuff. Jeff Sexton, Dubb Ferrell, Mike Curoso and Rick Woods were the big winners of the nigh t, and everybody got a good fair chance of making some points and some money. The list of riders that got off during the competition is a long one. Mark Cherf, Dave Galvin, Sonny utter, Troy McKee, Phil Moon, Bill Meister, Scott Autrey, BiU Cody, Guy Waterson, Mark Cherry and Steve Nutter all bit the dust at leas t once during the nigh t. It migh t have been the track, the pressure of the race, or both. Whatever it was, there were a lot of racers hitting the ground without their bikes. The night had been long coming into the final few races, and in event 23, Jeff Sex ton and Rick Woods were tied for first place. Dan Becker was one point behind the leaders with 20, and in his last race broke a chain netting himself last place and one point, thus tying with Sexton and Woods. In the last race of the night, Dubb Ferrell took the win, giving him a total of 2 I and also tying him with the other leaders, but Mike Curoso ran away with the whole show. He scored a third place in that race, giving him 22 pain ts overall and the win. Curoso deserved the win, and under the guidance of George Wenn he has become one of the hardest chargers on the dirt oval. The run-off for second saw Ferrell and Sexton on the 30 yard line and Woods on the 60. Becker couldn't race, his bike being out of commission_ Going into the first turn, Sexton was tight on the pole and in the lead. Sexton deserved the spot in the winners circle as much as Curoso. Sexton has been injured more this season than any other rider, and only his persistance and unwillinlt"ess to j(ive into the pain and Yamalube 2-Cycle Oil helps you get wherever you're going dependably.
