CAL., OCT. 31 The sky was dark grey, and a steady drizzle was falling as the first riders slipped away from the starters clock. The rain was in the plus column for the first twen ty or so riders on the normally dusty trails of the Mendocino National Forest. By the end of the day, the intermittent rain and a mixture of dust was enough to leave riders covered with a thin layer of mud. At least one rider found a stretch of whoop-de-doos to be unhealthy for man and machine. After clipping a tree with his forks, they failed to recoil properly. At abou t 40 miles per, he did a foreward roU over his handlebars and managed to survive with only a dislocated shoulder. The day was fuU of ups and downs for riders. Switch backs up to 6000-plus feet, momentum hills, and then back down the other side. A fine effort was made by the Oakland M.C. to council check points. But from 6000 feet it's hard to hide. Camouflage netting may help.
