Information (415) 581-1256 r4~~~A RACE PROMOTION Rugged Rex Staten tore apart the Expert ranks today and swept both the 250 and 500 classes in CMC motocross competition at Carlsbad Raceway. "The 250 seems slow," he said between the two motos and went out and proved it, battling early with Jeff Vidic (Mai) in the lead. Then. after finally getting by, he moved away to a fair lead <:Iver Danny LaPorte (Pen) who was going like gangbusters in each round to move up to second at the end. In the 500., though. Rex just turned on the wick to WFO. left it there and settled back for the ride to defeat Kenny Zahrt (Bul) and Mike Yorba (Bul), who finished second and third respectively in each moto and overall. For the first few 125 laps it was a five·rider scramble. Eventually. Marty Smith (Mon) came through the pack to take over the lead from Chuc"k Lunde (Hon) and Rick Sheren (Hon). Smith had problems though when he apporached the downhill and suddenly found his shoulder had come out of its socket. Out of control. he went off a jump and the power of the landing shoved the ann back into place. Shortly after that, the chain came off and Marty, still recovering from the flu. called it a day. This kft Lunde in the point position with Sheren righ t on his tail. Billy Urban (Hon). who also.had worked up from a bad start, had picked off third from Robert Elliott and was closing fast in third. Suddenly Rick got all sideways going up the big hill and pearly lost it. followed quickly by an error by Urban who stalled. It went on that way to the checkered with Lunde pulling it out over Sheren and Urban. who re·passed Elliott for third. In the fmal. it started off with Dave Eropkin (Bul) and Urban hassling for the lead around turn two when they bumped in front of the pack. went down and gave Lunde the advantage followed quickly by Tommy Croft (H.D) and Sheren. After building a good lead. the front and rear motor mounts came off Lunde's Honda and he slowed down to even tually finish third. still good.for the overall. Croft took over the ,lead in the moto and Sheren. trying for the overall win • could not get out of second spot and it cost him. Croft could only score third on poin IS after a tenth in the first moto. and Urban took fourth after a final moto fifth. Albert Cancino earned the number 24 C MC piaIe last year as an IMermediate and has been plugging a way this year trying hard to earn enough points to become Expert. Then, he switched from a Husky to a Honda and whammo! The change was perfect for him and today he scored a very impressive overall 125 Intermediate victory with a 2-1-1 showing over two other notables. Robert Fudge (Hon) and Bob Seki (Pen). Kory Andrew (Mai) scored the 250 Intermediate overall with a 2·3·1 showing. besting John Curtis (Hus) in the fmal round. John went into it with a pair of overalls. needing only a fifth or better to cinch it; he took sixth. The 500s went to Steve Roach (CZ) with two event wins. • Randy Myen (99) led the charge. 10
