IIount type 'eO Expert run Steve Young held off a hard chargc from Duane Spence when Spence finally figu,ed out that the track had gotten to the groove stage after ha.ving been wide open fo, most of the evening. One class of Experts that stayed pretty much the same was the 500 Expert. Alex Jorgensen brought out hi. trick 350 Kawasalti and flat put it on the assembled which included Ray Huff and Jim Foley, two of the bettcr experienccd riders. A new shiny face bas appeared on the horizon in the form of a 100 Novice, namcd Dallas Davis. Riding a 100 Yamaha., this kid has talent and showed it by placing second to Bryan Cabes at Lodi and then winning the rough scrambles at Oakdale the next day. For a newcomer, this young man has tremendous speed and style. If he - can keep it up, he'll be a champion right soon. Winning the big run of the day was Neil MacDannald on his 250 Elsinore. Neil will hold onto a black plate spot despite not having competed since th early part of the year. Kim Jorgensen made up for bad times at Lodi by taking second to MacDannald over Ronnie Alsop who rode for the first time in two months after a bout with a broken arm. He got off a two story building he was working on. In his first 'ace back, he won the 125 Expert main over Mark Smith. Smith has wrapped up the top spot in points for the District and will get ready for a pro card in the near future. Looks like D·36 has still another champion to graduate to the National ranks. At least one a year and usually more. Not bothering to change tires from K·70's to knobbies was Jeff Eide and Jim Foley. For Foley it spelled disaster while Eide hardly noticed and, coming off a second in the 250 Junio, from Lodi, he held off AI McGehee for the day race and the win. AI was riding a new mount, just purchased from Duane Bowling. Tho. interesting part of this is that when AI started racing, his first number was 444v. When he made the Junior ranks last month, he asked and got, 44v. , The sale of the 250 Suzuki might sbow that Bowling is retiring and if so, he retires the number 4v, so AI McGehee may just keep that' number 4 thing ~in~ • CMC at Ascot By John Bethea GARDENA, CAL., OCT. 24 Bob Hosford;riding both the 250 and 500cc Expert classes for the first time this season in CMC, came off with a pair of second overalls but didn'l make a close friend of factory Honda rider Dave Pessy in the process. The incident came in their first and only encounter of the night. It was the 250 class and Pessy was leading. From out of nowhere came Hosford bashing his way toward the front. The last lap flag had appeared and it was just two turns from the checkered when Hosford caught Pessy and dove to the inside in an attempt to pass. Neither ,ider would give an inch and they banged togetne" sending Hosford down on the low side and Pessy over the high. Randy Myers shot hy taking the victory followed quickly by fellow-Bultaco-mounted Ray Lopez. Hosford jumped up, re-fired and sped into the final tum to take third. Pessy, knocked-out, laid on the track for several minutes before finally coming to and walking away under his own power. He rode only the 125 class after that and did well. Myers went on to sweep the 250ccs, upp;ng his point lead for the season championship over Nelson Whitehill. Hosford came back with a ~air of seconds to achieve second overall with Lopez finished up in third. The Hondas of Chuck Lunde and Pessy dominated the 125 Experts. Dave won the flrst two with Lunde grabbing seconds, but Chuck pulled it out in the third and that was enough for the overall as Dave slipped off the pace and f.rushed fourth, second overall. Chuck Bower (Pen), never out of the action but never really in it either, snatched third overall witha 4/3/2 showing. . Hosford continued his hotshoe style in the 500 Experts, but he was up against Jim West while doing it and Jimmy was not about to get whipped. He won the first and third motos, grabbed second to Hosford in the mid-round and that was way more than enough for the victory. Chris Allen (CZ) came across for third after the series. Regulars claimed top honors in the trophy-chasing Intermediates. Jeff Witherell's 500 win was up against the Experts and he did it with a triple. Conrad Weber (CZ) and Kelly Bautista (CZ) did it differently in the 125 and 250s, and each did it with identical perfo, mances: a first, second and fifth. The 125s, a jumbled series of motos, had David Bush (Hon) and Louis Morrison (Hon) taking second and third after one moto victory. Mike Winters, however, gave Bautista a tough go for the 250 first as he scored points on a third and two seconds. Overall? Bautista 827, Winters on the Maico 825. That Tim Ochoa/Doug Nicol battled resumed tonight in the Minis and it was another of those scrappers finally secu,ed by Nicol with two firsts, even though Ochoa won the third meeting. Ben Francis (Hon) came back strong after a first mot fifth, won the fmal pair and claimed the overall when Rick Hutchinson (Yam) could only secure a couple of thirds after his first race win. The 125 Juniors went to Paul Needels (Car) in three-moto sco,ing style and Paul did it with victories in two of them and a second in the third. David Sobodos (Hon) traded positions with him in all three, but came up with the shorter end and two seconds and a first. . Tim McCa,tney zipped away with the 250 Junior win in the winner-take-all final over Mike Tschoepe (CZ) and Glen Matsumoto (CZ), but only after a tight struggle. The 500s went to Don Cox, who is making a habit of winning lately on his Maico. Dale Hicks (Suz) was second with one moto win. •
