Page 4 October 23, 1973 Continued from page 3 witness the classification of Red Rock Canyon as a State Recreation Area and the forthcoming purchase of PG&E dunelands at Pismo State Beach. With the completition of our OHV study and planning, we will be in a position to in telJigen tly spend money from the OHV fund. From this point onwards, the size of our program depends entirely on how large this fund becomes and this, in tum, depends upon the number of green stickers sold. We hope that your readers. and all other OHV enthusiasts will register their OHV's and support the one State program specifically designed to provide them with use areas which they want and need. WILLIAM PENN MOTT,JR. Director, Dept. of Parks & Recreation Sacramento, Calif. Six Days quality, MORE on BLM During April and May of this year, the BLM conducted ~ series of public hearings throughout Northwestern California concerning the land-use classification of the King Range National Conservation Area. The proposals offered hy the BLM prohibited vehicular access to the majority of the area in question. The public meeting notices appeared to have reached the preservationist groups in plenty of time, but did not reach the off-road vehicle enUlUsiasts until after some of the hearings had been held. The result .was that the preservationists packed the hearings and the off-Yoaders didn't have time to be alerted. Consequently, the BLM's proposals (which coincide with the preservationist's desires) went almost unchallenged. As a result, MORE has requested a federal investigation of the BLM's practice with respect to public hearings. We are not surprised, then, that the BLM has suddenly decided to hold additional hearings on this subject. But, again, they have given us short notice. The BLM letter dated September 21 arrived at the MORE office in Sacramento on October 5th! Th;s letter advises of two additional "final" meetings to be held in Garberville at the Justice Court at 8 :00 p.m. on October 16th and at the Honeydew Mauole coffee shop on October 17th at 8 :00 p.m. In our opinion, the BLM is trying to "clear its skirts" with the federal investigation now under way. We'll also bet that the preservation;sts received their notices two weeks ago, and will try to pack the house by busing students in from Humboldt College and elsewhere. Well, if you haven't caught the drift by now, it is absolutely imperative that every' off-roader in Northern California attend this meeting and let the BLM know tha t we really are concerned. In case you're wondering if we have any tracks up here, here's a small list: Washougal MX (Wash.) and in Oregon; Fox Hollow, Grande Ronde, Albany, Deschutes, Delta Park and McMinnville. Contributor Jan Newman provided coverage from Deschutes in last week's paper. How about wiring in some folks from those other tracks to send in some stuff, or to at least write so we can let them know what to do. The subject of event coverage is explained in the managing editor's column on page 15 of this issue. We urge all readers interested in more local action to check it out...
