With the win, Hateley also took High Poin t IT honors at his home track for the '73 season that has found him passing the majority of the national events. The two best all around Junior riders in the nation, John Gennai and Rick Hocking, squared off in their final yellow plate IT battle and it was Gennai and his Triumph over Hocking and his Yamaha hands down. Gennai topped the field in time trials, clocking the fastest one lap, including the ones turned in by the Experts. Hocking was second fastest. In the heat race a poor start saw Gennai coming from sixth on the first lap to an eventual runaway win. Hocking went wire to wire in his heat to post an equal victory. In the rmal it was Gennai to the comer first with Hocking hot on his rear wheel. But as the laps went by it was Gennai steadily pulling away to wrap up the win and the title of State Junior IT Champ. Walt Foster, Sal PelusQ and John Sperry made it a three way' dogfight for third with Foster winning out. Bob Hosford is the only rider who races a four-stroke lightweight in Novice Ascot events this year. Bob missed making Junior last season by one point. He missed winning the Novice IT title by a lap. Gary Bevans and his Bultaco started on the pole after winning the fastest of the Novice heats. Bevans was an early leader but gave way to Hosford on hi. old but strong Honda 350 twin. It looked like certain victory until the riders turned into the infield on the seventh lap. Hosford, out in front, bailed off hard in tum two and laid on the edge of the track. Bevans was back in front for the second time. Then Dennis Briggs poin ted his Dad-tune~ Kawasaki forward and grabbed the win away from Bevans on the rmal two turns. For B~ggs, a hot ;:1:IMI1' and cold running Novice all season, it was his rlrst big win and Dad appeared happier than any rider at the trophy presentation. Bruce Hanlon" Scott Smith and Tom Berry rounded out the rlrst five but it was strictly a three rider affair going in to the rmal three laps. Ascot now will close out the season with half mile racing on Friday nights through the month of October. The next IT may not happen until the armual 100 lapper next March, after Daytona and before the April opening '74 half mile season.
