Art Baumann finished a luckless season with a third.
Gary Fisher (21) and Jim Allen dice in the heat.
They finished both heats
way: The Kawasaki trio
DuHamel, Gary Nixon,
Baumann leading the
Yamaha of Ken Roberts, the Suzuki of·
Paul Smart, and the Fred Deeley
Yamaha of rookie Steve Baker. And
when it was all over there wasn't an "if
only" to be heard· anywhere because
none of the leaders crashed or broke
down. It was a clean, untarnished,
significant victory for DuHamel and
Kawasaki.
Heats
The heat races were as good as any
racing all weekend. Baumann edged out
DuHamel for the first heat win. In the
second heat, Nixon traded the lead wi th
Gary Scott (Tri) and Cliff Carr (Kaw)
for all five laps. Scott was giving away a
horrendous amount of horsepower to
the Kawasakis but he made it back up in
the infield where, he was going faster
than anyone. Exiting the last turn of the
last lap it was Scott, followed by Nixon
and Carr. Bu t things got reversed by the
finish line and Carr led Nixon for the
win.

ahead of Kenny Roberu. Peter Williams,
all the way from England, didn't start
because of a
'Petrol" leak. His
countryman Mick Gran t, who initially
cut quite a swath from the back row
where he started because of a
mechanical failure in the heat, soon
retired after passing about half of 'the
field. •
The front four, DuHamel, Baumann,
Nixon, and Roberts began to put
distance on the !'est of the field as
Nixon began to stalk Baumann. On lap
six he caught and passed Baumann and
went to work on Yvon.
In the mean time there were a rash of
retirements. The Harleys of Rayborn
and Lawwill wen t belly up and they
pulled intO' the pits together. Rayborn's
broke a cylinder. Dave Aldana came in
and out of the pits with an oil leak
before he retired.
Gary Scott, although plagued by a
loose seat, passed Cliff Carr and went
after Hurley Wilvert, who was running
