October 9,1973 Knapp was now in second spo.t, and Bill Friant was third on a Penton 125 and Bryan Bennett had moved past Jordan to hold first Amateur and fourth overall. The finish was in the same place as the first gas check, the course ran like a clover leaf, and we were waiting for the winner after this I DO-mile desert race. Jim's pits were waiting with fingers crossed as he has had back luck after coming back from a shoulder injury two months ago, but the young tiger brought it into the finish line with an unbelievable 12-minute lead over a . happy Art Knapp on a Tracy tuned Husky. In fact Tracy got out of sick bay to prepare the bike. Fishback and Knapp both agreed, '!the course was one of the best of the year, they went over a lot of new trails; they just went all out." Dick Harris pulled in third on his San Fernando Yamaha tuned Yarnie. Bill Friant ·took fourth on the 125 . en ton and Bryan Bennett took fifth and first Amateur on his Yamaha. First 250 Amateur and tenth overall went to Chuck Pettigrew on a new Cooper; it looked tricky. It must have been a big bike course as. there were only two lighrweights in the first ten spots. First 250 Expert was Ron Music. He was being pushed hard by his good buddie Allen Lund, both on Bultacos. The 100 class was a close battle between Larry _ Roeseler and Bruce Ogilvie. On the second loop they were going at it in. each turn and came through the pits ten feet apart. But Bruce got a flat rear tire in the last ten miles and Roeseler picked up the win with Bruce still close behind; both were mounted on Harleys. First Amateur 175 went to Jerry Nelson on a Penton, and Lee Coldwell picked up first 100 Amateur. on his Hodaka. The Novice leaders were really making some time; we were surprised to see Robert Balentine on a Yamaha pull in 69th overall after that 15 minute later start. Second was 18-year-old Dan Harris on his 17·5 Yamaha, followed by Bob Deleplaine and Alan May, both on big Huskys! Then came our first 250 Novice, Jim Steel on a· Husky. First 100cc Novice was fourteen year old Tom Kelley; he's a little tiger and will bear watched in the future. • It was a three-loop hare 'n hound, and the Dusters obviously lived up to their name. Fishback Takes ·Dusters Hare and Hound By Dick Wright FREMONT VALLEY, CAL., SEPT. 30 Nineteen-year-old Jim Fishback got it all together today and won the Dusters M.e. three loop hare and hound. Jim logged just over two hours of rough riding over a choppy course in deep sand on his big 400 CZ, tuned by his dad out of Yamaha of Fontana. The Dusters M.C. put a lot of work into their race, as we haven't had a three loop H & H for a long time. The banner for the start dropped at 9: 15 a.m. and on the trail five miles out it was big Jim with a good lead over Mitch Mayes. Then came a very fast Amateur, Larry Jordan; also Art Knapp was up there and another Amateur, Bryan Bennett. Mayes was able to stay with Fishback, and at the second check was only about a half mile behind. Also A.C. Bakken and Tom Muto were having a go at it but in the tight duel they ran into each other and both did endo's fighting for fourth spot, which more less put them out of the running. Cordis Brooks moved into / third spot, but then a bum knee started acting up and he had Ito cool it. Meanwhile, the Novices had started and Dan Harris On a very fast 175 Yamaha had the lead and was really making it; eventual winner Robert Balentine was second. Fishback made it into the first gas check with a minute lead over Mayes and took off for the second loop of 35 miles. The second loop had a steep rocky hill in it but Jim made the loop in good time, checked in and out and headed for the final loop. A long time went by and no Mayes; we heard he did his front wheel in and dropped out. Art .'Jim Fishback finished 12 minutes ahead of second place Art Knapp. Results Overall, 1.
