LUCERNE VALLEY, CAL., SEPT. 23 The Shamrocks Me held their eighteenth annual desert race, and, as usual, it was a good one. Also as usual, it was the start of the 1: winter desert racing season, and much to the surprise of no one Mitch Mayes, who is on a hot streak, did it again. C I t wasn , t as easy t h · ome as A . . Mayes was still pushing hard in a see-saw battle with Bakken. 's m A .C . came th rough th e pI t ' f'Irs t spot, but Mayes was hot on his tail. Tom Brooks (DKW) was third, but had to give up the chase with a fiat rear tire. Larry Roeseler was • first 100cc on a Harley. There was a hot duel going on in the Novice race as Ross Wright had the lead at the fae road shortly after the bomb, but Alan May on a Husky took over the lead, and made the pits in good time running 149th overall after a fifteen minute late start. The first loop took about an hour and fifteen minutes, a true forty five mile loop. Now we were waiting at the fmish line after two and a half hours. Mitch Mayes came in for the checkers. A.C. Bakken was second. Bakken's new bride, Sandy, came and and gave her hubhy a big hug. Both leaders were tired and both had sore feet from kicking so many rocks. Larry Pfutzenreuter took first 250 on his Bultaco. He was a little late because he ran out of gas 15 miles out and had a fiat rear tire_ Benny Padilla came in next. Mike Marsh is still the top Amateur as he picked up the honors for the second week in a row on hi. fast Husky. Cordis Brooks picked the Division II win on his 175 Bultaco, first 250 Amateur went to Craig Curtis on a Yamaha, Max Eddy took the 175 Amateur win and a. very happy Chris Austin was the first 1 no Amateur in. Novice hero was Alan May, only 15 years old. Dick Weinberandt took first 250 Novice on a CZ and Ed Faulkner was first 100 Novice. We understand that Dick Manus, the BLM representative, helped with the starting banner and his truck was used as the banner truck. We also heard that Chickens MC banner was used.
