It's close to a quarter mile track; high speed stuff. • Christmas Valley Desert 100 By Ilene K. Scott . CHRISTMAS VALLEY, ORE., SPET. 2 The Klamath Basin MQtorcycle Association held its 5th annual Christmas Valley Desert 100 cross country race Labor Day weekend. Three hundred riders from as far away as San Diego, Seattle and Boise, Idaho rolled into the small desert community of Christmas Valley, Oregon to take on the sand dunes, alkali flats, and Oregon sage brush which stands as tall as eight feet in some areas. Dust was terrible and will long be remembered. The BLM said it was the worst dust in years and riders didn't doubt them at all ...especially when riding down fIre roads and hitting pot holes filled with as much as two feet of the powdery stuff. Homer Mosley, Hines, Oregon lucked out to win first overall after chasing Bob Strobel of Eugene for most of the race. Strobel had led until bike failure but hung on to finish nin th in the Open class. . No serious accidents or injuries to mar the race - just lost riders with broken bikes. All were found but it took until II PM to rescue the last two riders. Winners were: Homer Mosley (Open Class), Paul Hug (200 Class), Mel Thompson (125 Class). • Tardiff Tops J 0 Series The happy van for all purpose use. By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., AUG. 29 success. The rider count was way up with the addition of the mini-bikes and the spectator count was also up. The best part of the series came tonight when all the goodies were given out including twice as much in the way of con tingencies. Taking home a pair of ABC Custom leathers was high point series winner Kirk Tardiff. Kirk had sewed up the battle the wee k prior and his third place fmish behind Mark Smith and Steve Eklund was just icing on the cake. It's interesting to note that it wasn't wins that got Tardiff the high placing. He was one of the few riders that rode each and every week of the II race series and only failed to trophy twice. The place in the series was a tie between Steve Eklund and Rick Hocking. Hocking and his Champion race frame Yarnaha are still king here, but Rick's schedule was just too busy for a serious effort at home. Eklund and his Jensen motors were consistent and the last race created the- tie-. Pulling in a fourth place overall finish waS Dennis Martin. The surprise here is that he rides in the 100 Novice class.. High point trophies were also awarded as the short track season ended tonight. The overall winner of the 17 races was Mark Smith accumulating a massive 52 points, all on his 125cc DKW. Martin got the second place trophy, beating out Steve Carrillo, another 100 Novice by two points. Kirk Tardiff won the 250 division and pulled it out of the hat with his third. Ted Davidson was leading but hadn't been making all the races and had to settle for second. Dan Young suffered the worst. The 250 Junior rider had 34 points going for him when he broke his leg two weeks from the end and saw a good bid for a high point go down the tube. Hocking was the easy shoo-in for the 360 with Jerry Kole the second place man. Both were on tour back East and will receive special welcome home gifts when they return. • Wired for stereo Four stereo speakers Automatic transmission V-8 engine Ford or Chevy Vans, %.or % ton Walls and floor carpeted 3" padding under floor carpet Ceiling paneled Fremont Raceway's Jimmy Odom series. of short track racing completed its second annual tour and all in all, it was an unqualified .
