He pea.ls~d the previous night in winning at the Chris Beck Arena with J)istrict champ Jeff Davidson running second in a short track meeting. His high hopes were tempmarily inverted at Calistoga when he broke a haybale on the high side of the track in practice, ripping off his exhaust pipe and gear shift lever and cracking his gear case. Among Robinson's secret weapons is a strong faith in epoxies. He's used them before when he couldn't afford a welder's fee. This time he pulled the secret weapon from his tool box of necessity to mend the cracked gear case. used baling wire from the ruptured haybale to mount his exhaust pipe, and got the gear shift lever working. No longe.r confident that he could finish, he ran away with his heat with some very good Ascot twins in tow. He then repeated the repair process, saying that he only wanted to finish the Main to gain some District points. The gearbox would only hold a small amount of oil. the bac k wheel was ou t of alignmen t and vibration was bad. ' He led lap one of the Main with Manuel Crummett in second and Bill Calicura third. Calicura passed Crummett for second and then Nick Nazzisis wo~ a dice wjth Crummett that lasted the remainder of the 10 lap race for tturd place. Calicura, in second held to a safe margin waiting for Robinson's mount to come apart, bu t that didn't happen. It was an exciting finish with luck and Robinson's will to win keeping his gearbox togethe'r at top speed for the 360 Expert class. Rick Delacy (Bul), a new Expert class talent, provided the excitement in the 250 Main which was eventually won Larry Drew (OSS). With 29 Experts In the class, Delacy won his qualifying heat. John Guglielmetti (Yam) passed Drew to win the first qualifying heat, and Manuel Crummett won the third heat. On the first lap of the 250 Expert final, John Guglielmetti was second to Delacy and Manuel Crummett next. Guglielmetti slipped off the groove on lap three with Drew moving up to second place and Crummett now in third. G",g1ielmetti got back in line in fourth spot followed by Joe Brown. Delacy led for six laps before Drew came by on the front straight and went on to win the 10 lap event with Delacy staying within striking distance of the winner. Brian Caves moved in to the winning spot in the ~OO Novice final by passing Steve Carrillo early in the 100 Novire final while Mike Burch moved up for third place. Every event had its moments for someone and behina those moments for Brian Johnson (on a new Honda in the 1 25 Novice rlass) was a dealer sponsorship by Pop Kenyon's in Sunnvale, if he won at Calistoga. He didn't win bu t he was beside winner, Gary Caves at the finish line: He had been beside him several times during the race after moving up to second spot. ~y The win to win.
