Team Montesa rider Marland Whaley apparently couldn't put all of his thoughts together in one place today as he dropped to a second place finish behind the spirited young Bultaco rider Bernie Schreiber. The Master class, as it exists today in Southern California, is rapidly gaining an unfair share of "Superstars" as Sammy Miller puts it, and it is only a matter of time before one of the stars has to return to earth and ride with the rest of the guys. There is no doubt in anybody's mind though that Bernie Schreiber is doing all the right things these days. Today he turned in some outstanding loop scores to take the first place prize with a total of 33 points. Second place but a good distance back was Marland Whaley with 43. He was followed. closely by Mar.k Eggar who in only his fourth event since recovering from a broken wrist earlier' in the year copped a total of 45. Mark, in his usual calm understatement, told me that it was "one of his lousiest rides ever." That's Mark. My pick to be· the newest member of Team Mexican is fourth place fmisher Martin Belair, who turned in a 47 for the day. Mike Griffitts in the Expert class got aced out of the class. win by one point to Dave Stanley who had a 29. Mike didn't have that much time to look around as Andre Plouffe was right on his Cota's back wheel with an identical score of 30 points. Mike copped the win by registering one more clean section than Andre. Amateur rider Don Anderson put his day in order with a nice ride of 21 points to take the top spot in· his division. Following up behind him was Jean Fradette who has forsaken his 326 Bultaco to take a ride on one of the 125 Montesa baby Cotas. As a result the two lightweights put it together for a total of 26. Kent Graham pulled into the pits with a 29 for third and Doug Bradbury did it with 30 for the number one spot. Now we get to the kids who had some kind of competition going in the "A" Class. It finally came .down to Brian Fraser as the victor with a score of 18 points and 9 cleans while Derek Bernard was also posting an 18 but he had only 8 cleans. Third place was snagged by Brian Lyle with a 19 and 8 cleans with fourth place being taken by Ray Luna with another 19 but with six cleans. After a three month lay-off to get my head together it was nice to get back out to the trial and see the familiar faces of old friends as well as all of the newcomers who have decided that pIonking is the nicest way to spend a weekend on a motorcycle without wondering if your going to be in one piece or flat broke when Monday comes around. To the people who ride calmly and with style, it's nice to be back. • • The ole double dab: Unidivided attention.
