Tonight it was the most important one Mike Rooney has ridden all season. A first place would sew up the NorCal Championship and second would mean a run-off if Alan Christian won event 20. Mike passed Bruce Haserot on lap three to move into first spot with the 3000 plus fans on their feet roaring him on. When starte,r Chris Reams waved the checkered flag a lap later, Mike was a very happy young man. The Jack Gormley prepared J.A.P. that Mike has ridden is a fme example of what makes winners. Many hours of hard work were well rewarded tonight. Alan Christian won the last event and second honors. A third place in his first event will be on Alan's mind for quite awhile. His last four rides were all to first place. . Reno's John Cunningham was the pre-race favorite and righ tfully so. John was this year's SRA (north) high point. man and also high pointer at Reno, Napa and Sacramento. A third place in his first event turned out to be most costly. Missing from tonight's program were Joe-Henry, Butch Corder, and Cale Stetler. Three very good riders that were OU t due to injury. Joe has qualified for . the National Championship and it is hoped by many of the Northern California fans that he will be able to compete. Bruce Haserot was aboard the Vickers Honda/Chuck Miller tuned Eso that Joe Henry usually rides and said after the races; "It's like getting out of a Model A and in to a Cadillac... Wine Cup Title to Rich ,MacMurray By Sneaky Pete NAPA, CAL., AUG. 25 Reno's Rich MacMurray had five perfect rides tonight to win the "Napa Town and Country Fairgrounds Championship". Even 17 was the clincher for Rich. (The same event that was the decider for Mike Rooney at Sacramento the previous night.) Rich was lined up in this event with Larry Mulock, Gregg Rew, and Norm Denny. Contrary to what many of the fans though t, this was not a shoo-in for Rich. Norm Denny was in close pursuit all four laps and only a bike length separated them at the finish. Leonardo Lincoln-Mercury of Napa sponsors Rich, -and his victory tonight was a just reward for them. The Leonardo's are avid speedway ,fans and have furnished the car and trophy girl for trophy presentations at both NorCal tracks. This year they quite often put up extra money for Division 2 Mains and consolation events that otherwise _would have carried very Uttle money for the riders. Ron McGill is one of the many fine young riders in NorCal Speed'Yay, He had three firsts and two seconds tonight. In the events where he finished second, the winners were MacMurray and Cunningham. Ron has been riding Division 2 at other tracks and tonigh t might have very well meant graduation time for h-irn. Dad, Harry McGill does the wrenching, pushing, and sponsoring for Ron. Promoter Ed Green expressed thanks to the Town and Country Fairgrounds directors and staff, the many fans and others who have helped to bring speedway racing to Napa. Ed hopes to have a long season next year. Is it over already? • Step up to Bill Walters Leathers·!! BILL WALTERS LEATHERS BW 445 So. Victory Blvd. Burbank, California 91502
