Roberts won the Combined, but didn't finiSh the Expert. Th~ abov~ r~l~ase was th~ r~sult of a rain short~n~d Novice event that left the race short of the required 60 percent of laps run yet was f1ag~d as a race (checkered flag) instead of a halt (red flag). To say that this made some of the riders moody would be an und~rstatement. The result of the ensuing debate b~tween the riders and officials left the overall fmal ou tcome up in the air pending discussioD; a process that took nearly a full day to complete and set many riders on the way home with, a bad taste over the original decision (it's a race) and the interim one (there was no race). The major poin t was that some riders had slowed considerably when the rain came, losing a place or two (in one case even twelve spots), figuring on' another red flag halt to the action and a restart. However, th'e promoter's decision, relayed to AMA Regio,\!a1 Referee Charlie Watson, was "flag the race and payoff on finishing positions". The track was extremely dan~rous when wet but an underlying factor had to be the National motocross eliminations heats which could run rain or shine; it was also the case if of too many even ts crammed into too little a time. The nearly total unsatisfaction of the riders with the results led referee Watson to the decision of a calling the ev~nt a non·race; a decision which equally infuriated the riders but put everyone into the same boat. You can't quarrel if there wasn't really a race. The Novice event had shaped up to be a good one as Hank Scott secured the pole position for the first time this year, . bumping Jay Levingston from his accustomed spot. Wes Cooley, Gary Blackman, Rich Clutts, Les Johnson, and Bill Peters were all running strong with no one having a real edg~ ov~r the other. The start of the race was held up by the rain that cut the Junior event and there were threat~ning clouds as the flag fell. Hank Scott led the first lap with Jay Levingston bumping him on lap two for the lead. Gary Blackman, Les Johnson, and Bill P~krs were all close with Wes Cooley moving from the back of the pack to sixth by lap two. • Results NOVICE ROAD RACE, 1. Gary Blackman (Yam), 8 laps. 2.
