Roberts had fIrst place all to himself after the second lap, but the race for second place wasn't decided until the final few inches before the start/fmish line. Only twenty riders started the race that was rained out on Saturday and rescheduled for Sunday morning. Roberts occupied the pole posi tion after having won his heat race over Carruthers, Fisher, and Gary Nixon. Don Castro won the other heat race by One bike length over John Long. The fITSt 1ap of the nineteen lap race set the pattern for the event as Fisher, Roberts, Castro, and Carruthers crossed the line at the end of the first lap virtually side by side. Roberts puUed ou t a three second lead by the fourth lap and increased his margin on each lap. With victory conceded to Roberts all eyes were on the figh t for the runnerup spot. There were 26 changes in the number two position during the nineteen lap race and Carruthers, Fisher, and Castro were the "changers." John Long held down a race-long fifth position, pressured in the early going by Gary Nixon and Art Baumann. Nixon's Team Dirty Yamaha gave up on the fIfth lap and Baumann rode out the race a solid sixth on his single cylinder Kawasaki. Baumann's teammate Yvon DuHamel was the only other non-Yamaha rider in the race and he retired on the second lap in the chicane. Jim Evans, Mike Clarke, and Marty Lunde carried on their own race wi thin a race during the frrst twelve laps bu t Evans' Yamaha stayed sound while the others slowed, and he was an uncon tes ted seven th at the finish. The last lap began with Fisher in fourth behind Carruthers and Castro, but it ended with Fisher in second The Parkesburg, Pennsylvania, resident 's1ipstreamed by Carruthers at the line to take .the runnerup spot with Castro being dropped to fourth and out of victory lane. Roberts average 104.612 MPH and collected $1,975 for 46 minutes of work. The inches separating Fisher, Carruthers, and Castro were valuable inches as the difference between second and fourth was over $700. • Unofficial Results' Comb. EX/Jr 76-mile Championship Road Race.
