The Dutch 500 GP By Tomie G. Lafon ST. ANTHONIS, HOLLAND, AUG. 19 The last go around. This is the one that will make or break DeCoster and Bauer.- The same thing was to happen to Willi Bauer as happened to Ake Jonsson in 1971. The Maico would go belly up. Only this time DeCoster would break and the last round would be the one. Saturday evening after practice, Brad Lackey's Kawasaki was down on power. Brad decided to do a top end job. After borrowing enough tools, mostly from the CZ team, and with the help of John Banks and Roger DeCoster, the job was done just before dark. For a little break in, there's nothing better than a few full-bore,- crossed-up, one·handed wheelies. Banks has to try it out too. John tucks his left pant leg into his sock and takes off, no shirt and no smash hat, just his pan ts and "full bore" sandals. John was doing OK till he nearly high sided and called it a night. It was a1re"dy dark. Brad also found the front down tube was cracked. That old, Kaw was showing its age. After ,practice Sunday morning, the times were listed. Gerritt Wolsink had fast time. Funny how the best home rider always gets fast time. DeCoster had fast time in Belgium, Bauer had fast time in Germany. After the 500 Support class had a couple of rides, there was the presen tation of the in ternational riders with all the flags. The Champion Spark. Plug girls wen t down the line of riders getting their pictures taken as the band marched up and down in front of the grand stand, doing their thing. This year a rider received poin ts only 'for his best eleven rides. Even if he won all lWen ty-two motos, worth 330 points, he would only receive poin ts for half of them, that is, 165 points. Before this race DeCoster had 145 points and Gerritt Wolsink on his way to victory in the second mota. SEPT. 9 S.C.T .A. at Rethe Canyon SEPT. 23 Plonkers OCT. 7 S.D.T.R. OCT. 21y.0.T.E. Watch Calendar of Events for details P.O. Box 2498 Orange. Calif. CMC RIDE WITH THE BEST Bauer had 143. Bauer could improve his score with a first, second, or third. DeCoster, on the other hand, wouldn't gain anything by taking third as the lowest score from his best eleven rides is a third and another third won't help him. Bauer needed at least a second in one moto in front of DeCoster. If Willi had a second and DeCoster a third, Bauer will win by two poin ts as a second will drop a fourth. The last heat of the last race would decide the title. The riders walked back to the pits, got their bikes, came out and lined up, ready to go. As the gate fell, J ohn Bank~ pulled out to a good start and looked set to be first into the tum, but he shut off before anyone else. DeCoster rounded the turn first as half the field went by Banks. Big John just wasn't trying very hard. J iri Stodulka and Hans Polsvoort lost some time trying to run over one another. Both got up and took off unhurt. DeCoster came flying over the jump with Bauer hot on the trail followed by Ake Jonsson, Raymond Heeren, and Banks. The fans were going wild, waving their programs at DeCoster and Bauer. Frans Sigmans moved up to fourth ahead of Heeren as Gerritt Wolsink moved Banks back to seventh. On the third lap DeCoster crashed and Bauer came around first over the jump to start the fourth lap. Jonsson was second now, followed by Dutchman Peter Willems with DeCoster in fourth, Frans Sigmans fifth and Christer Hammargren sixth ahead of Banks. Wolsink had worked up to tenth. The fans were going wild, Willi Bauer was going to be the new World Champ! Things stayed the same for the next few laps except Jonsson was moving up on Bauer. Banks had enough laps in for his start money and pulled in the pits and loaded up to sit ou t the rest of the day. The old will to win is gone. Then the bottom fell ou t for Maico. Wolsink crashed into the fence on lap ten trying to miss a spectator running across the track. Bauer came around barely" motoring. His base gasket had blown. It was allover for Bauer. DeCoster would win and be World Champ! But this was not to be either. Two laps later De<;oster pitted, his pipe broken off about five inches from the port. After abou t a minu te of hand waving, DeCoster went back out. It was in vain as fourth was the bes t he could do. Ake Jonsson won, followed in by Jaak Van Velthoven and Christer Hammargren for a Yamaha 1-2-3. Brad Lackey was out with a broken frame. The crack hadn't healed up overnight. Bauer got a new top end and carb
