Page 7 September 11, 1973 one mote run in you can have a chance at that record you're shooting fOf. Besides the usual amount of individual entries by Johnny Lunchbucket, who brought his one bike to the flats along with a buddy, or girl friend and beer, there are several fairly large and organized efforts aimed at capturing a block of records. Most of these group efforts are back on some way of cycle factories or accessory companies for advertising value. Young Mark Lingua, wh.o's practically been raised on the salt flats as a result of his fathers automobile racing interests over the years, shows up with four small Harleys and Jack Krizman and his crew to twist wrenches. Krizman does a lot of research and developmen t for Harley-Davidson Motor Co. and by the look of the bikes, Mark didn't walk into his local dealer and get them. Through much hard work Mark manages to capture three records in the small displacement classes. Most of these records are under a hundred miles an hour, but they don't come easy on the small machines. Dale Alexander, a pilot for Flying Tiger Airlines, is the busiest man at Bonneville all week. Dale manages the Yoshimura speed equipment firm in his s pare time and along wi th four motorcycles, biings none other than "Pops" Yoshimura along in person. Dale is making so many runs on so many different bikes that he turns his production 900 Kawasaki over to Bruce Flanders to ride. Bruce cranks off a decent ride, posting the fastest production record of the week with a speed of 141.733 MPH. Bruce is ,really stoked with getting the record. Who, wouldn't be? Meanwhile Dale is rapidly losing weight with all the running back and forth from one end of the flats to the other, riding various concoctions that Pops has dreamed up. The neatest and best-sounding bike is a 650cc Honda four that has a six-speed transmission and sounds like it's turning 15,000 revs when it's making a run. It's a high just to hear jt. , Dale gets a total of seven records by the end of the meet, which must be some sort of record in itself. It is celebration time in Wendover, Utah. The flats wouldn't seem like Bonneville without the crew of Jack Wilson of Big D Cycles of Dallas, Texas. Jack brings a whole bunch of Triumphs with various and sundry riders. He and his crew have set many records over the years and this year they fielded some of tbe most exotic equipment at the flats. Turbo-chargers were hanging off of Triumph triples and the' neat thing about it was that they worked. Alth0':lgh the fastest record that was captured hy this crew was only in the neighborhood of 156 MPH, they are charting the way to go in years to come for the speed and horsepower seeker. The streamliners, most of which are just marking time until the meet is over so they can make World Land Speed Record attempts, always draw the most Nitto Knobby Tires Reg~ $22.10 NOW 14.87 4:00x18 Reg. 22.95 NOW 18.96 4:50x18 Reg. 27.05 NOW 20.87 AIl'Prices Plus Fed.
