The ice was broken this year with Kawas~ki's two day Northwest MX Championship event At this point the horses hold a definite edge irr track conditions and preparations. The MX course was laid out in the infield of the horse racing track with about a dozen or so jumps built into an otherwise flat smooth course with flat corners which refused to show any sign of a berm. There were two drawing points advertised for the mid·week race. One was carried through with complete success when eleven year old Rex Weimer from Grants Pass displayed the winning ticket and a broad smile as he accepted the 100cc Kawasaki given away by Kawasaki Motors Corporation at the end of the second day's race. The second advertised feature was the . personal appearance of Brad Lackey and Jim Weinert By the second day there was information floating around that Lackey remained in Paris to protesct his high standing in the European competition. Anyone can excuse that. However, no one even came up with a good rumor as to where Weinert might be. (Certainly no way to win friends and influence people.) Marty of the riders did show up both days and· several were winners both days. Included among these were Mike Ormsby (Hon) in .the Mini class, Mark Gregson (Yam) in the 125 Junior arId Chuck Sun (Bul) in the 250 Senior class. James Roark (Yam) received a fourth place trophy in Wednesday's Mini race and a less welcome reminder on his return on Thursday. As he took his first practice lap he slid out and left with a broken leg. There was a jump at the finish line that looked innocent enough but created problems for a Ilumber of riders. It was relatively low and had a straight approach and a straight landing bu t there were some real blood chilling endos pulled off it. Ken t Adolphson (Hon) was the first victim in the first 125 Junior moto on Wednesday. The race was stopped short of it's ten minutes as he lay shaken on the course. Fortunately he was not hurt but his bike was out of commission with broken bars. ' Chuck Sun was a victim of the Phantom Hill in the second moto of the 250 and Open Senior combined race. Early in the race he took the lead from Les Womack in a battle of the Buls and as he came over the jump he pulled up too high. Sun went face down in the dirt as his bike landed some 15 feet ahead of him. He shook it off and returned to the race behind Womack, Bo Hart (Kaw) and Mike Odell, also on a Bultaco. Sun regained the lead by the end of the race. Womack pulled off at the white flag with bike miseries. Jerry Allen (CZ) came along for the win in the Open class. Some of the best competition of the two days was nipped in the bud in Thursday's first 250-0pen Senior race. Womack, Sun and Bob Leach (Mai) were in a three way battle at the front of the pack for severa.\ laps before Womack was black flagged because his silencer was flopping and he dropped out. Ray Crawford showed some real ability in this group as he rode up with the front runners to nab second in the 250 Senior on a 125 Suzuh The 125 Junior and Senior race on , Thursday saw more blac k flags and crashes. Mark Gregson (Yam), a Junior rider had been up front in a battle with Senior riders Tim Eide and Barney Newman, both on Pen tons. Eide and Newman en tered the final moto tied with a win each. Eide had taken the lead when Gregson and Newman came over the finish line jump together and Newman had his turn at crashing. The nex t lap Gregson got the black flag for a loose silencer and somewhere in the excitement Eide's bike gasped and died. Gregson and Newman both returned to finish. Scott Sagor and Merle Kirchem diced Chuck Sun crossed up and croues the line. it out on Suzukis- for the 250 Junior on Wednesday. Their battle was just as heated on Thursday. But the arrival of Randy Patterson (Yam) and George Doyle (Kaw) put them down a coupfe of positions. • Results: Wednesday. Aug'. 29 Mini: 1. Mike Ormsby (Hon); 2. Donnie MaUlding (Yam); 3.
