DeCoster, Goebers, and Von Velthoven finished one· two-three in the· first moto and DeCoster took a second with Von Velthoven seventh in the second moto. Newcomer Heeren backed up the four man team with a 12th in the second moto after Goebers lost three laps changing a flat tire caused by the rocky course. The best three finishes by each team counted towards points for the meet. Team America, John DeSoto (CZ), Jim Pomeroy (Bul), and Mike Hartwig (Hus) took fourth place behind the Belgian, Swedish, and Russian teams. Pomeroy arrived in Belgium after having picked up a ·new Bultaco in Spain (a 400) and proceeded to take a seventh in the first moto and a strong fifth in the second. Mike Hartwig, aboard Bengt Aberg's Husky, was the fastest American in time trials, but he started in the second row and was forced to battle his way through the 48 rider field. He logged an 18th behind the 15th position of DeSoto in the IlI'St moto. Pineapple John took a solid tenth in the second moto. A t first it was believed that the American team had f'misbed third, but a recheck of the score sheets placed the Russian team ahead of the Americans. Ake Jonsson was the star of the Swedish team as he turned in a fifth in the first moto and ran away with the second. • Beauchamp Wins H-D Parade At Terre-Haute National TERRE HAUTE, IND., AUG. 3 Blazing heat replaced' the ram which originally cancelled the Terre Haute half·mile National, but it had little effect on Rex Beauchamp in his first National victory. The Michigan youngster had set fast time on the cobby Indiana track, and finished second to Jim Rice in the fastest heat. Harley. was weU represented, with Mert Lawwill and Dave Sehl also winning their heats. Dave Aldana (Nor) spoiled the sweep by winning the fourth heat. In the fiut Semi, Dick Mann lost fire while in the lead on the last lap, allowing Gene Romero and Scott Brelsford to scoot by and into the final. The second Semi was headed by Cal Rayborn', with Gary Scott getting the second transfer. Don Castro was out of the money.in third. Jim Rice took the early lead in the 2Q-lap National and held it for seven laps, 'figh ting off challenges from Charlie Seale and Dave Sehl. Then Rice was sidelined with magneto trouble and Sehl took over the point position. Sehl keptllis Harley in front for the next seven laps, as Beauchamp worked his way up from fifth to second. He closed guickly and passed Sehl for the lead on lap 15. From there he ran uncontested to the checkered flag and his first National win. Mert Lawwill also got by Sehl to finish second. Charlie Seale was fourth, making it a first· four sweep for Harley. The only accident. was a first lap slide·out by Scott Brelsford, who was uninjured and restarted with the field.
