Skip Aksland, in the second of four Novice heats set a new five lap Ascot record of 1:59.54, bettering John Gennai's record of 1:59.62, set Aug. 4, 1972. Taking the only other direct transfer in the second heat was Gary Bevans, sending John Allison, Dave Harris, and W. E. Wisenant to the Semi. The third heat was the second fastest with the win going to Chuck Soderstrom ahead of Tandy Adams. The nex t three across the line and headed for the semi were John Smith, Dave Racine, and the only 'female rider to ever make a Main event at Ascot, Debbie Reon. The first Novice heat was the slowest of the four with the win going to Tom Berry and second spot going to Brad Hold. Third and fourth went to Gary White and Russ Bamett for their positions in the Semi. The final Novice heat was won by Randy Roderick with Nick Nazzisi right on his rear wheel. Headed for the Semi were Randy Miller and Jeff Coleman who fmished third and fourth. Setting fast qualifying time for both the Juniors and Experts was Norton mounted Rex Barratt. In the fll'st heat he was headed for the win on the last lap when over anxious throttle action coming out of tum four caused an easy, but embarassing slide·out. Moving up for the win was Sal Peluso, also a Junior, with Bob Saners getting second. Expert Tom Horton took third with Junior Mike Myers running fourth. Danny Hockie ran away from the second heat with Tony Den finishing . second. Veteran Expe~t Ron Moore took third spot ahead of John Gennai sending them both to the Semi. John Hateley won the third heat ahead of current Ascot point leader, DeWayne Keeter. Nabbing third in the second heat was Junior Rob Morrison ahead of Devon Sowell. The fmal Junior/Expert heat was taken from the green to the checkered flag by rookie Expert Brian LaPlante ahead of Junior John Sperry, Expert Ron' Powell and Junior Art Fredenburgh. The Novice Semi was won by John Allison, being challenged all the way by Randy Miller who got second and John Smith who took third ahead of Jeff Coleman: The Junior/Expert Semi was an upset win for Art Fredenburgh as he came from last starting position. Tom Horton took second place and the only other transfer to the Main. The Trophy Dash pitted twoJuniors against the veteran Expert. DeWayne' Keeter and the rookie Expert Brian LaPlan teo Junior Rex Barrat was fll'st off the line with the other Junior, Danny Hockie, right with him. Hockie was first down the back chute .with Barratt taking to the high groove into tum three and four. Unfortunately the high groove turned out to be the slow way to go as Hockie won the kiss with Barrat taking second, Keeter third, and LaPlan te fourth. The Novice Maln turned out to be a runaway for Skip Aksland in his bid to take over the point lead of Tom Berry.. Aksland is now within two hundred points of Berry, which means that if Berry makes too many mistakes, which isn't likely, or misses one or two weeks of racing it could cost him the poin t lead. Brad Holt took the second spot in tonight's race dropping Berry to third Gary Bevans took fourth on the only Bultaco in the Main. The combined Junior/Expert Main pitted DeWayne Keeter against the number two and three men for the Experts, John Hateley and rookie Tom Horton. For the Juniors Danny Hockie was out to tighten the race between he and Rick Hocking. Hockie was first ilIan to the first tum with the rest of the field mixing it up for th rest of the posit1ons. Keeter, Horton, and Junior Art Fredenburgh were all chasing Hockie with Hateley running about sixth. Hockie seemed to have it in the bag but there was somebody gaining positions back in the pack, a rider here, a rider there, etc. Consistency is what makes a rider a crowd pleaser and a racer. For someone who makes wine commercials to win an Ascot Main event is not all that unusual and John Hateley is the type of professional to do both. Riding. the high groove, keeping in excellent physical shape, and keeping a level head is what John Hateley does best. Tonigh t he did all these things and added yet another Ascot win to his career. Hockie held on to second money ahead of DeWayne Keeter whose point lead has been narrowed to just 26. Taking fourth was Tom Horton with Art Fredenburgh running fifth. Next week's half mile program should be just as exciting with the Ascot point season not too far from over. The following Friday will be a TT Steeplechase with the Festival taking place on Saturday the fifteenth. The rock festival will featureJ ose Feliciano, EI Chicano and Bramha with Half Mile. racing that night. Your $5.50 admission ticket to the festival is also your admission ticket to the race that night. Results: Novice Main: 1. Skip Aksland (Yam); 2. Brad Holt (KaWI; 3. Tom Berry (Yam); 4.
