Several problems cropped up when Terry started using titanium. The biggest problem with titanium is the rapid destruction of cutting and shaving tools. One or two passes on the lathe can ruin a cutting edge. Titanium is harder than stainless steel and just as corrosion resistanL Terry uses it for both axles, engine braces, and assorted other parts and bolts all over the bike. Titanium bolts can easily strip the steel nuts used with them before you know what's happening. Terry uses stcel bars because, if not correctly treated with argon gas when welding on cross braces, titanium bars will snap off in crashes. When Terry decided he wan ted to race two years ago, he and his father set out to make the BSA competitive against the lighter two stroke motocrossers. Their work at shaving away the pounds led first to help from LeBard and Underwood, and then to factory sponsorship. The end result was the Power BSA, which Terry hopes will soon become a Triumph. Terry runs a titanium front axle he machincd ou t of square stock, and a Rickman front wheel assembly. The fork tube crown nu ts arc titanium, weighjng 48% less than stock. The home design fork SLOpS arc titanium, weighing an incredible 75% less than equally strong steel components ... with titanium, it is possible to usc Icss metal and still get the strength of steel. The ti tanjum footpeg assemblies are lowered and swept back from the stock foorpeg position.
