September 4, 1973 MOST CHAMPIONS DEPEND ON CMC OCIR By John Bethea 'THE MATCHED SET' TUSTIN, CAL., AUG. 16 Bruce McDougal is hot! Tonight at Orange County International Raceway, the Mettco Penton man won his fourth consecutive night ••• LPS #1 For Motocross and Enduro... or just street riding... this new performance·rated greaseless protector has to be used to be believed. Dries out ignitions... protects the entire elect· rical system... protects the cable mechanism... kee-ps chrome sharp... even protects your vinyl. Fantastic? You said it! CMC 125 Expert event since returning to SoGaI from the GP in Missouri. Only Chuck Bower and Tim Lunde have accomplished this fete in 1973, but Bruce is still a long ways away from the all-time record of 11 straight set back in 197 I by Jeff Wright. But, who knows? His performance tonight was not a sweeper, however. He guaranteed cash at the end of the night by winning the first two motos then tried pursuing Rick Bean (Han) for most of the third before sizing up his lead over third place Mark Tyer (Pen) and deciding to cool it to the checkered. Bean never was in it despite that win. In the first mota he finished ninth and in the next 11th. Tyer, consistent with two tltirds and a second, took second easily when Chuck Bower (Pen) had final mota troubles and took a 13 tho Bruce then tried his Yamaha in the 250 Expert, but found it just didn't have the power and he lmished third overall. Yamaha-mounted Brucc Baron clicked in the final two races to add to his first event sixth and took the overall with Larry McCarty (Bul) second. Maico's Luke Messer was also making a bid this evening for No. 4 in a row, but he came up short even though he won the final six-Iapper. Joe Scotland (Mai) got the easy overall wi th Bill Rubly on a Boyd and Stellings framed CZ cashing in second. Messer took a third. All three Intermediate portions were hody contested. Hank Jones (Hus) and Bill Shepard (CZ) took lUrns winning and taking second in the 500's, with Hank winning two and overall. A fourth in the first 250 killed Ted Hamner's chances. He took 'his Yamaha to the second mota win and runner-up in the third, but Dale Anderson (Bul) had two firsts and a second to head the heap. In the 125 's, Geoff Burgess (Mnk) and Calvin Weber (CZ) wen t in to the decider with a one-two apiece. Calvin won bu t Geoff had troubles and failed to score a point. He still.took second OA. The only sweeper of the night came in the 100 Juniors and Marty Miller (Ste) did the cleaning chores. Gary Tamietti (Pen), last week's winner, got second. Nathan Anderson (Yam) rode very consistently with two seconds and a first to top the 500 Juniors three-mota section. Dave Blosser (CZ) won the first moto and took second overall. Young Bill Kuajawa led a Honda sweep of the Mini Bike class and he did it with two victories. The other win wen t to second overall Danny VanAuken. Finals were held in the 125s and 250s and they, too, were hard ones. Nick Roberts (Hon) won the race-long duel with Mark Abrahams (Suz) in the 125 and Cal Reiten (Suz) snuck home the winner in the 250 m a race that typified the evening affairs: slide·ou ts and spills. • LPS # 3 There has never been an all·weather chain lubricant and rust inhibitor like this.
