A few changes in rake and steering over past Bultacos make the compromise a little more even. The new 175 Pursang seems to steer more quic~y than past 125's or 250's. It is far easier to get into a motocross corner. In the wide open spaces it fecls more twitchy than previous models but doesn't actually seem to be any less stable. It doesn't feel quite so confidence inspiring in high speed cross-country work, but at the same time seems to be the same old incredibly forgiving mount. Through time we have found it veJ¥ difficult to falloff a Bultaco. The 175 Pursang was Those screws are real flesh grabbers. Then you just drag a foot and let the rear end 'flail. For motocross it is a very confidence inspiring bike that will, make you look a whole lot flashier than you really are. In short, mo tocross h andlin g seems to be all ilia t you could ask for. . Suspcnsion units are Betor, naturally. Betor front forks both perfonn and leak notoriously wen. Ours did both, for awhile. After an appreciable amount of oil had drpoled down the fork legs, damping faded and bottoming ,ensued. With the proper seals they would be a very adequate answer. The rear shocks were somewbat less than adequate. The seals in both shocks ruptured so quickly that we never really had time to analyze their perfonnance. Within lIVe miles most of the damping fluid was spre'ad all over the rear of the bike. The rear end wag, which was somewhat evident in whoop-de-doos, was no doubt caused by the absence of any damping. The 175 Pursang loses (in Bultaco tradition) in the br~g department. The fron t unit was sensitive but lacked power. With the cable adjusted all -the way out the lever could be pulled to the grip without lockup on hard ground. It also faded if there were two consecutive straigh to punctuated by a slow corner. The rear squealed and squalled and slowed things down until it got hot. Then it either locked or faded depending on mood. If you ride a 175 Pursang with stock brakes, don't try to pick up tllne on braking. Incidentally, there are some lining materials being offered by accessory people which seem to solve the problem. . The other major gripe on the Pursang' was shifting. It took a day of nose dives and near things to figure out why there rtdClI~ "ollgwlng Olsl. 37 r RIC JENSEN • BOB MCLAUGHLIN • LAR IfY HI:.RGQutST • LARRY PFUTZENRUETER • fO ~CHEIOLER • WALT AXTHELM" LARRY HEAHN . People with big feet (all of us) caught the bend of the shift lever with the arch and/or 'heel of their boots. We spent some really puzzled moments trying to figure out why it was shifting when there wasn't a toe in the vicinity. All this wouldn't be' bad, except, even when we were aware ,of the problem we couldn't seem to do anything about it. The footpeg puts your, foot right there. The shift lever could use redesign. The 175 comes with bars that are wen SUIted to most uses and the grips and levers are comfortable and bendable, in that order. The throttle Thole bends _m to be the offernders when standing up. assembly has tension and adjustment screws stic.king out of the top which removed a large chunk of flesh from one rider's hand. The seat is the usual Bultaco affair; you sit in one place or be subjected to some punishment. For long legged riders that isn't necessarily quite the right place. The Bultaco rides best standing up anyway. The gas tank is also nonnal Pursang and will take you about 35 miles. That's not quite long enough for long hare and hounds, so you may need a larger tank. The stock tank is also hard to fill because the back bone of the tank comes so close to the opening. In order to race the 175 Pursanlt to its potential, you'll want to have someone grind on your ports a little, replace the rear shocks and the fork seals, get real used to shifting it, probably change the tank, and protect the downpipe with a bash plate. The Pursang, in our opinion, has as high a potential as any 175, but it will take some or all of these things to get it out. Oh yes, like about me last half dozen Bultacos we've had for telt, the 175 didn't sputter, load up, foul or do any-, thingnuty during the time we had it. It staited moot often on first kick, and used, the lame plug through out the telt..
