Page 12 August 28,1973 POI' La Ninez By John Ulrich Got the BLM blues, gringo? Worried about government actions that tend to discourage, limit, and bother off-road racers? Well, pack up your Husky in your old red van, and smile, smile, smiJe... that is, whiJe you head lOUth of the border. While the activities of the U.S. government, no matter how well intended or organized they may be, tend to hassle off road race fans, the progressive government of Baja California's Governor Milton Castellanos has rolled out the red carpet for bikers wishing to race in Baja. It was Governor Castenanos who authorized the formation of the Comite De Promociones Turisticas, A. C., or the B'lia Sports Committee as a government agency. The Committee has the unqualified support and assistance of all agencies under Castellanos' government, and is actively recruiting motorcyclists for participation in their races. All proceedS from BSC races will go to the benefit of the children of Baja California. According to Juan Jose Henandez Limon, representing the BSC at a recent press conference held by the Coordinating Council of Off Road Racing Dl.rectors in San Diego, California, all participants in BSC races will have no problem with governmen t red tape when entering Mexico from a foregin country. In addition, there will be a doctor at every checkpoint, . increased payback to 50% of all entry fees, and a policy of keeping away from . all pavement in courses. "We want this to remain an off road race," Limon said, speaking speciIJcally of the 1973 Baja Mil (1000) race. " The Baja Mil will be a checkpoint to checkpoint race. Limon wants more bikers to enter, and is providing some attractive incentives. For example, Limon pointed out that getting a bike home from La paz is a problem for many entrants. To solve this diffICulty, BSC is working on a plan to ship motorcycles ou t of La paz by either sea or air. "We're very sure we're going to be able to do it for motorcycles," he said. • HORSEPOWER You try Bel-Ray Oil, we'U add a horse or two to your engine ... FREE! This year will mark the first time that this country will host an international series, hopefully with at least a dozen of Europe's best riders competing. The final event is intended to be held in the Southern California area, and will count for points towards the FIM championship. Traditionally the trials championship has been called the "European Championship," and the highest award for the winner is the title European Champion. The California points event, however, will now upgrade the series to FIM Prize, which is the intermediate step towards a full World Championship. Miller states, "It has been my really great pleasure to work with American riden in the past, and to observe .the. great strides in rider skill development. This school, hopefully, will p.rovide the serious rider with the guidance in machine adjustments, and the difficult nature of the sections required for an FIM poin Is even L .. Entries for the school will be accepted on a first-come·fmt-served basis, and will be limited to 25 riders, so that all entrants will have the opportunity to really take part in the program. Entry fee for the a1J-day school is $15. For further information and registration please contact SaddJeback • Park. Phone 714/639-5832.
