There is not enough sensitivity to keep from locking up the rear bTake and killing the engine. It is hard to feel just where the brake pedal position is, especially at the critical moments going into comers and on downhills. Fifteen more minu tes pass before the sensors start transmitting the new messages correctly so that you understand how much brake you've put on, or need to put on. After that, it is a mat er of polishing your skill. We discover afterwards that this is still an R & D session. The insensitivity to the brake pedal will be overcome by thinning the PVC cover from 2mm to Imm in the flexible area. The impenetravility of the thick, chambered for lightness sole will not be compromised - since it won't be changed. The damn things begin to feel pretty good, i.e., nonnal for gpod-fitting motocross boots after an hour or two of wearing them. The protection is absolutely unparalleled by any boot either of us has ever wom. Hakan Andersson asks for a pair. Marcel Wiertz wants some. There is the white pain t smear from hitting a course marking post on the shin area of the left booL There was no feeling of pain or impacL No black and blue marks appeared the next day. The toes have been dug in repeatedly to square off comers on off camber downhills. The stone scars are slowly coming out of the nylon like high-tensile skin. These boots protect your foot and leg and, upon reflection, that is why you wear boots in motorHcle competition in the first place. I inadvertently even got my.foot run over and dido't feel any pain. (Obviously, I knew it had happened as the Belgian blew me off.) Last year's Belgian Trials Champion, Robert Gigot, tried the enduro-soled types and found them suitable for trials. It now seems as if at least one of the Belgian ISDT teams will be wearing them. You just don't ~t the stone bruises or motor-battenng nonnally expected during riding wh.en wearing the.. boots. Plus the soles won't peel off because of the construction. The weakest part still seems to be the binge, but it works and after 15 thirty-minute motos is still working for Guton Rabier. He likes the blue and yellow boots. I kind of go for the red and black ones. There are also yeUow{blue and black/red available, or'will be available. Production won't start for the U.S. ·until Jim Pomeroy gives his OK to the boot or incorporates any f"mal changes he thinks necessary. You probably won't be able to buy this boot in the United States for another two months and then it will cost about the same as most other top-line competition boots: On the cbeap side of $70 (like $64.95 or thereabouts.) Conclusions: I see three advan tages to the Jim Pomeroy Plastic Boot. A.) They are easy to get on and off. Snap-snap-snap, literally. Added to this, they are easy to maintain in good-looking condition. Just hose them off after a motocross and they're ready to go. The mud won't build up on them during a moto adding to the weight, either. B.) The protection to your shin, heel, toe, instep, arcb - every part of your body covered by the boot cahnot' be beaL We did not encounter an impact situation that could overcome the external shell or internal padded liner of the bOOL C.) These boots are likely to last the sportsman rider/competitor quite a long time. If you're lucky, you Can figure one season on a good pair of boots; less if you actually race every week. The plastic foot-bolders seem likely to go more than thaL As an off-the-wall estimate, say three competition seasons. Any breakable items or losable items such as the nylon hinge screws or aluminum buckles will be available as replacement items. I can't see the buckles breaking except under some catastrophic press.ure. I was frankly skeptical of the boots, as was the feisty little Belgian Motocross Champ, Rabier, until we rode with them for an afternoon. Gaston for a month. But, after the conditioning period described, they feel natural, they seem to work in competition, and your fee t and shins don't show the marks of your last race for a week afterwards. Plus you Can matcb them to your leathers and look really snappy when y.ou're styling around the pitl before, between, and after motos. • . • _ "CITY MAI~TO: U\\ VU~l _ STATE ZIP _ _ TELEPHONE (use veil codel ~w~~~!~ev!:!!~:rl~dt •• Los Angeles.
