GARDENA, CAL., AUG 17 For the fIrst time this season Ascot switched from their regular Friday night half-mile to run a quarter mile short track. Ascot has run .quarter mile speedway this season but the quarter mile sbort track seemed to provide an exciting change of pace for both riders and spectators alike with such notables as Rick Hocking and John Gennai, who last year were the nation's leading indoor short track stars. Danny Hockie was the fast qualifier and appeared to have the first heat sewed up until mechanical ills put him on the sidelines for the rest of the evening. Denriy Robinson moved in for the win with Wayne Wiseman running in second and DeWayne Keeter picking off third and last transfer spot for the Main. The second heat was won by Junior Rob Morrison with Don Frauenberger grabbing second ahead of Expert Ron Powell. The third heat, the fastest of the nine heats, looked more like a match race between none other than Rick Hocking and John Gennai. Hocking got the jump on the rest of the pack with John hesitating that costly fraction of a second at the start which left him running about fifth. By the time lap three came around Gennai was running third and putting the pressure on Neil MacGregor who was running hard to catch Hocking. Just as they took the white nag Gennai shot past Neil and twisted the throttle for all it was worth but Hocking had the momentum and the win with Gennai second, and MacGregor third. Paul Conserriere was the only Expert to win a heat race, however this is not uncommon in short track due to the fact that the Novices and Juniors are more familar with the smaller . displacement equipment. The number two man behind Conserriere was Milte Laney followed by Russ Barnet. The fifth heat was won by Skip Akslanq followed by John Allison and Chuck Soderstrom. Heat 6 went to Scott Smith with Rick Kraft grabbing the third position. Bob Hosford on a Honda won the seventh heat over Tom B etry and Guy Butterfield Mike Renslow won his heat, the eighth of nine heats, beating out Tom Clark and Junior John Sperry. Rex Barratt, one of the hardest charging Juniors this season won his heat over Randy Miller and Mike Myers. With three semis it was the rider's last _ chance to make the Main event and the first man to win his Semi was none other than, yep, Rick Hocking. Second wen t to Rob Morrison with third going to Scott Smith followed by John Gennai who again had trouble leaving the starting line. The second Semi was won by Bob Hosford who also has been riding speedway lately, with Dennis Robinson getting second and third going to DeWayne Keeter on his Harley, Fourth wen t to Paul Consemere. The final Semi was won by Skip Aksland followed by John Allison and Randy Miller with Scott Marshall getting fourth. The Consolation race, which is somewhat similar to the trophy f'mal that is used this year at all dirt track Nationals, was won by Bob Sanders with Mel Stoddard getting second and AI Thielman running third. Two alternates got to ride the Trophy Dash with Rick Hocking getting the win and Skip Aksland running second, Bob Hosford third and Ron ~oweU taking the fourth spOL The Main event was a runaway win for the champion-framed Yamaha of Rick Hocking but the battle for the remaining finishing positions was quite a display of riding talent and determination. Skip Aksland took the second spot with Bob Hosford and Dennis Robinson right on his rear wheel Don Smith took fifth, Ron Powell sixth, and the current Ascot Half Mile Point leader, DeWayne Keeter, took the last f'mishing position. This Friday (Aug. 24),' due to the wide acceptance of the Short Track action tonight, Ascot will again have another Short Track program with a Match Race between the nation's Indoor Champ, Hocking and Danny Hockie, who qualified fastest for tonight'. program. •
