Even after praetice got started, the coune was changed. Finally things settled down, and practice in ernest began. Pierre Karsmaltcn looked as usual smooth and lightning fast, a sure bet in the 500 class; that is, if there is anything for sure in motocroSL Both Weinert and Ellis seemed to have the edge in the 250 clasL Racing got underway late with the 250's up r.rst. Meanwhile, up front, Jimmy Ellis had his Boston Cycle Yamaha smoking, trying to stay ahead of Weinert and Thorwa1dson. Weinert was hot OIl EDis's tail until he tangled with Gary Chaplin, who feD in the switch-back. From there on E1Iis bad an easy time of it. Weinert was second foDowed by ThorwaJdson, Eirstedt, Grossi and Gary JODCL On the start of the second 250 moto it was John Franklin (Mail leading with Ellis breathing down his neck. Weinert got hung up on the starting gate and came away last. Ellis chased Franldin for four laps, then took oyer the lead, only to lose it again two laps later when his cbain hroke. FranIdin inherited the lead, foDowed closely by Gary Jones and Tim Hart. Behind Hart the order was Chaplin, Thorwaldson, Eirstedt, Bill Grossi and BDb Grossi. On lap twelve Franldin was pressured into dropping it by Jones, who took command of the race. The order at the flag was Gary J 0Iles, Tim Hart, Rich Thorwaldson. Jim Weinert and Bob Grossi. The start of the third moto found Bill Grossi leading Gary Joan, EIis, Hart, Grossi and Thorwa1dson. Ellis replaced Grossi as the leader aDd went 011 to take the win. Then on the last lap. ~roaching the last tum. both riden moved over to pass a bac k . marker. Thorwaldson seized the opportunity to zap Weinert and take the overall win. The open motot should havc been a KanmaItcn benefit, and up until the final moto they were. Pierre won the fint two motoa with cue. In the third moto, whie makinc up for a bad start, Kanma1r.crs crashed hard and bent his thift lever. By the time he rejoined the fray he had lost almost a whole lap to the leaders.
