·WHAT MAKES KEllY TRICK?' M N g a. M .... '" ~ so « ~ z W ..J (.) >- (.) Ben Zakarian (13u) aced the Minis at Oaltdale. A t the end of the 10 lap Main Davidson's Bultaco was the winner, but only after some very close racing with Dennis Robinson. Robinson showed up to race with no rear brake and was sent home to I'" same or not ride. The time element was close but he got the necessary stuff and help to get it done. Robinson led the Main easily and Jeff had to work to get through traffic and then sit on Robinson's tail and wait. The strategy is to make the other guy nervous enough to make a mistake about all you can do on such a short facility. , As starter Kent J obnson threw the white, Davidson made his move, diving inside on Robinson and getting a wheel underneath the opposing Yamaha. From there it took just a little persuasion to get on by and take the win. All that would have been enough action, bu t exiting the last tum Robinson got in to a terrific slide and nearly came back across the inside of the track, taking out the starter and losing second to Fenn Pervier, who was right on his rear wheel all the way. Robinson saved it, and the starter was all smiles in the .trophy box, as the fair queen handed Davidson the winning brass and topped' it off with a big kiss. Chico's Lowell Moural came the long distance and easily took the 250 Expert over Rick Delacy, who just made the Expert transfer. Moural is definitely one of the best on the little Short Tracks and proves it at every outing, like at Chico. One rider he should watch for from up there is Brad Bruns who has no fear of sliding his 100 Suzuki through, the turns. Bruns won easily over Greg Miles, and the Sacramento racer is headed for the big times. OAKDALE, CAL., AUG. 4 It was the Davidson family once again dominating the action over in the California Central Valley, with Jeff Davidson's little brother Ted winning the 250 Expert Main and the other little brother, Mitch, winning the 125 Junior Main to remain in the lead for the overall high point race. Jeff didn't fair too well tonight and finished fourth after chasing young Ted aroued in the heat. Last week the two orily chased each other for two laps, as Jeff knocked little brother off, but this week Ted was long gone after passing Carl Yerby on the third lap. Enough 360 Novices showed up to make a class and then the two-strokes were blown off by two four-stroke 350 Hondas. Phil Vitale continued his winning ways on the ancient age Glen Hall motor, while Bob Holloway wound his 350 twin to the second. Steve Hall surprised a lot of souls tonigh t with a wire to wire win in the 175 Novice Main aboard a stock Kawasaki, even had all the paint and seat stuff. Steven is better noted for his 650 runs but showed the troops wh'at it, was all about for this lightweight. Running second in the overall high point series was Alan McGehee. He was just two poin ts behind point leader Mitch Davidson and was sitting pretty in second spot in the 125 Novice Main, when he bailed in the last turn. While there are still some six events left, Roger Harrill, Mark Schmeck and Billy Rose aren't going to hand any points or trophies away to the say-hey-kid, Hey Alan_ ANTIOCH, CAL., AUG. 5 The annual Antioch Fair brings out the Wanderlust M.C. and its Annual Short Track at the fairgrounds. The best part of this type of ..ctivity is just being able to go, get practice, go down the midway, ride a few, pitch a few and look a whole lot. That is what makes this affair an annual success. Jim Foley, the former National scrambles champ is the main attraction and surrounded by Mark Smith, Jerry Kole and many others, makes for the greatest racing around. Kole won the 360 Expert Main after Foley had trouble~ getting off the line. Foley is still the best starter, but today wasn't his day for the Mains. He started the heat exceptionally well and won over Kole, with Robinson doing the other half of the heat. Robinson, as in Thursday night's run,Jed off the Main, with Kole working up to catch and then, at the end, putting on the pressure and pass in beautiful style around the outside of the first corner. It drew a lot of "oohs" and 4'aahs" and was very well done. Mark Smith had absolutely no trouble winning the 260 Expert Main on the Elmer's Yaroaha Special, tuned by Marty Lewis and company. Smith is well on his way to honors in both Scrambles and Short Track. • Kenny Roberts wins Colorado National Mile. That Yamaha blistering through the turns looks pretty much like anyone of the big Yamahas you might 'see around, but look again, the frame is a Champion Racing Frame and tucked in there also are many Shell Racing Specialties. Trick yes, but that's why Kenny Roberts on his Yamaha is currently the only rider with two national wins under his belt. The point is this, Yamaha knows where it's at when it comes to winning races, and your Yamaha dealer can now sell you a Yamaha Racing Tips catalog, develo~d through the expe· rience of many races of all types.
