((U:rr[:r~f' I ~ ~UlbLbL Two nights a year, professional riders get to race at the Chris Beck Arena as part of the Sonoma County Fair attractions in Santa Rosa. It is a John Soares and Bob Barkhimer Associates promotion with Rick Hocking and John Gennai the chief winners. Gennai took the Tuesday nigh t opening race and Hocking won the Wednesday night event of the second Fair week. It's not easy to win with hot shot Novice riders fresh from the sportsman ranks entering professional racing on tracks more familiar to them than to the full time pros. On the fmal night, Novice Jeff Davidson led winner Rick Hocking for one lap after passing him to lead heat tWo, but Hocking overhauled him on the following lap. Dennis Robinson led Hocking off the starting line in a semi-final again won by Hocking. Local Novice favorite, Larry Drew p)eased the crowd in winning the second semi-fmal from Junior road racer, Billy Labrie of St. Petersburg, Florida. Labrie had won his heat race and later led the trophy dash won by Hocking. Labrie was leading most of the semi with Gennai coming from behind to pass Jerry Kole for third. Drew kept trying on each lap to force room on the inside line by Labrie for his front wheel coming out of the comers. With each lap getting faster and Drew far more aggressive than his nonn, he finally passed and led with Gennai still busy with Jerry Kole. . Douglas Rowell from Brunswick, Georgia, led a consolation race all the way un til the last lap when winner John Gugleilrnetti shot by from the pack to win. Gugleilmetti's throttle cable had come off in his heat while he was leading so he went to the back row, outside position in the consolation race from where he passed nine riders to win. Hocking was away in a hurry in the Main with Jeff Davidson and Mike R ens low racing for second spot. Renslow broke away wi th Davidson left to scrap with his competitors of the sportsman circuit. Larry Drew finished fourth, behind Davidson, but again defeating Billy Labrie. • 233 7th Ave.. City of Industry. '1' FREMONT, CAL., AUG. I Rick Hocking returned super fast quarter-mile Fremont once again and up the 360 Expert Main, pen saw another repeat of last race as Billy . McElyea (Yam) won .all three motos. Up for second was Steve Gall (Suz) and third was Doug Gassaway (Yam), who we hadn't seen in quite some time. The kid's race saw Mike Huffman (Kaw) and Jimmy Roberts (Ind) tied on points after two motos. Huffman took it when Roberts got off about 50 feet from the checkered flag. Second for the day was Wes Hardesty (Yam) and third went to Roberts. The special event was an eight lap team race. Each class winner chose a partner and changed riders on every lap. Eventual winners were BiUy McElyea and Tom Worfolk. • Four Day Short Track ,By Bill Spencer Northern California opened up the month of August with four Amateur Short Tracks and set the pace for what appears to be the new hot set up. What with the regular Wednesday night J 0 series at Fremont, Saturday night at the Pioneer arena in Oakdale, the two special runs at the Town and Country Fair in Napa and the to the oval at mopped this time from the third row. Hocking has something .going at this track that nobody else has, and when the Pro Short Track takes over on' August 18, Hocking's intentions are to go out and beat any of the four-wheel records that . are still standing. The run for the overall IUgh poin t win and a free set of leathers from Jim Odom is still being con tested by Kirk Tardiff and Scott Pearson, as Tardiff came up with a second place finish in the 250 Expert Main, behind Steve Eklund, to keep his point spread doing just that, spreading. Both took second place poitlts home, but the 250 was worth more trophies and so ,the spread is now six instead of five. All that, and there -are still four races to go. Eklund sits in a tie for fourth with Hocking and young Steve Carrillo of the 100cc class. Watch out for that kid. Mini-bike competition remains about the same, with both parents and spectators staring dumb-founded at the equipment and the speeds that the little guys turn. Ricky Baptista still dominates the little bike class, as Mickey Krusemann does in the Novice middleweigbt and Mike Fruzen the Expert, over the 70cc combined Juniors and Experts, while Randy Mamola is just nearly unbelievable on his 100cc Steens Hodaka. NAPA, CAL., AUG. 2 Part of every summer of racing is handled amongst the fairs that tour around the countryside and this annual tour through the wine country is one of the better ones. The track is nonnally used for rodeos, speedway bikes and even some destruction derbys but never before for Short Trackers, and it was quite a sight. to see many of the riders at work sweeping the track before the program . got under way. It is gratifying to know •that the people involved with the sport will gladly lend a hand to get the show on the road. This little event was designed to be just that, a little event But by the time sign-ups rolled around over 150 riders had signed in, and it was to be a full night of fast and slippery action. All to the enjoymen t of the near-packed grandstand. Jeff Davidson and his Number One plate showed up all the way from Modesto, and put on quite a demonstration of just how to ride little Short. Tracks. The style is close to what has to be done on the indoor, and Jeff will be tough in that department this year. Marty Smith had a good Short Track _k.
