Two nights a year, professional
riders get to race at the Chris Beck
Arena as part of the Sonoma
County Fair attractions in Santa
Rosa. It is a John Soares and Bob
Barkhimer Associates promotion with
Rick Hocking and John Gennai the
chief winners. Gennai took the Tuesday
nigh t opening race and Hocking won the
Wednesday night event of the second
Fair week.
It's not easy to win with hot shot
Novice riders fresh from the sportsman
ranks entering professional racing on
tracks more familiar to them than to the
full time pros.
On the fmal night, Novice Jeff
Davidson led winner Rick Hocking for
one lap after passing him to lead heat
tWo, but Hocking overhauled him on
the following lap. Dennis Robinson led
Hocking off the starting line in a
semi-final again won by Hocking.
Local Novice favorite, Larry Drew
p)eased the crowd in winning the second
semi-fmal from Junior road racer, Billy
Labrie of St. Petersburg, Florida. Labrie
had won his heat race and later led the
trophy dash won by Hocking.
Labrie was leading most of the semi
with Gennai coming from behind to
pass Jerry Kole for third. Drew kept
trying on each lap to force room on the
inside line by Labrie for his front wheel
coming out of the comers. With each
lap getting faster and Drew far more
aggressive than his nonn, he finally
passed and led with Gennai still busy
with Jerry Kole.
.
Douglas Rowell from Brunswick,
Georgia, led a consolation race all the
way un til the last lap when winner John
Gugleilrnetti shot by from the pack to
win. Gugleilmetti's throttle cable had
come off in his heat while he was
leading so he went to the back row,
outside position in the consolation race
from where he passed nine riders to win.
Hocking was away in a hurry in the
Main with Jeff Davidson and Mike
R ens low racing for second spot.
Renslow broke away wi th Davidson left
to scrap with his competitors of the
sportsman circuit. Larry Drew finished
fourth, behind Davidson, but again
defeating Billy Labrie.
