Birt LAS VEGAS, NEV., JULY 28 Night life m Vegas has been known for its bright lights, superb food, girls, booze, the never-ending game of cbance on the card tables, and the sound of dice crashing against the end of the table. Now there's a new sound added to the nigh t life of Vegas, and a new game of chance; it's called Motocross. John VanHoove, a member of the Las Vegas Motocross Club, was down at the shop a couple of weeks ago and asked me if I would come up for their opening race. Plans were made, and Saturday morning with the trucks loaded, we left Los Angeles at 4: 00 in the morning on our way to Vegas to see what it offered. . Our f"rrst stop at Vegas was to check out the race track and shake down the bikes. The motocross track is located at Craig Road Speedway and is owned by Bob VonNonnan_ Bob built Craig Road Speedway for race cars and races cars himself. Wit:l1 plenty of room at the back of the car track Bob built a motocross track. Night racing has come to Vegas. Promoting of the race and building th.e .track h~ been h,,!,d1ed by Bobby Wl1liams. He s a part-tIme truck driver and has been promoting motocross and 'IT in Vegas for the last two years. I smIled to myself. Bob was buzzing around there at about 90 miles an hour and that isn't easy in the noon Vega; heat. The track was laid out with a bulldozer; it wound around through the brush and trees, the water truck was pouring thousands of gallons of water on it, trying to get some moisture down the track surface, so the Vegas dirt wouldn't turn into powder. The lights for the track had been lost, and new ones had just come in. The workman was hanging them while we were there and hoping that' he had them in the righ t place. We left our bikes at the race track and went into town to get a bite to eat and wait for" race time. Race time was supposed to be at 8:00 with practice at 7:0Q. We arrived back at the track. at 7:00 and the place already had trucks waiting in line. At 8:00, when the race was to start, there were still entries coming in. The finish coun t was 240 en tries and 1,900 spectators for the night. This was the largest tumou t they had ever had for a motocross. The two small spectator stan~ were mled to the brim, and people bned the fence and the gr 0 unds everywhere. It was very apparent that !hey weren't ready for thIS many enfnes or spectators. More grandstands will be built by next" race time for the spectators' comfort. Nine o,'c1ock came and the first moto got under way. Abou t half of the track was Iigh ted, and the rest was dark, and I really mean dark. You couldn't see anything in some places. Funny thing, I didn't hear any where near· the amoun t of complaining that I expected. I've been to some of our own tracks here on opening nigh to with .much better ligh ting, and I heard many more complaints. Just maybe the Vegas riders showed a little more sportsmans1}ip than our SoCal riders do. The first moto was the mIDI beginners. These little tykes always turn me on. A battIe royal was between Karen Harris (Yam), Casey McNeil (Yam), and Ronnie Giger (Hon). The Mini Novices were next, and it looked like the American Honda racing team in force, with the three top riders, Mark Byers, Mike McCarty and Arthur DeLeon all riding Hondas. Jimmy Kauger and his Honda showed the .boys the way h,ome in the Mini Amateur class. The Mini Expert class was a run away for Kevin Davis and his Ini:J.ian. Watch out California. He's held the Number One plate on his bike for two years, and he didn't do it by luck. This boy knows how to ride. There were so many 100cc Novice entries that I couldn't keep them straight, but Roger Wells came out on top with his Kawasaki. Next moto on the line were 175 Experts front row, and 125 Amateurs second row. Vegas eyes were on this race, wondering if the home town riders could handle the three riders from California. At the drop of the starter's Ilag it was a mad rush to the first turn, with David Camp from California (DKW) charging into the lead and opening a big lead. Teammate Steve McFarland, after a bad start, charged through traffic to soon take over second spot on his Rickman. Steve Maxwell from California, also on a Rickman was first Amateur. 250cc Novice class, in two divisions, went to Bultaco riders Jerry Drescher and Ted Flynn. The 250cc Expert/Amateur saw Jack Johnson, a Hu.sky factory sponsored rider, riding with a head light (using his head wasn't he?), show the boys the way home. Jack held the Numbe.r One plate and got a second place for Husky this year in the Mint 400. John VanHoove is like John Rice here. He loves racing, and a race just wouldn't be right without him there. John's did Bul didn't sound too cool after the last moto, but like old BuIs are, it just hung in there and finish.ed. But John, you are going to have to tinker on it a little before the next race, to keep those over-40 wins. The riders were kept well in hand by the starter whose name is Sarge. He is . about 280 .pounds worth and bigger than two 400 Huskys and one 501 Maico thrown into one. He wasn't always right but he sure was the boss. ~hat matters is that he did a very good Job of keeping things running on time. The reason they call him Sarge is because he's been stationed at Nellis Air Force Base for the .past 26 years as chief medic. My hat is off to him for a job well done. The second round was just about a repeat of the first, and at the finish of the 500cc class racing was shut off for the night. It was 2:30 in the morning and the promoters figured the sun would- catch them if they ran a third moto. Now Vegas has more to offer than just brigh t ligh ts and crap tables. Ies called night motocross. RESULTS MINI BEG: 1. Karen Harris (Vam). 2. Casey McNeill (Yam). 3. Ronnie Giger (Han). MINI NOV: 1. Mark Byers (Hon). 2. Mike McCarty CHon). 3. Arthur DeLeon (Hon).
