(Continued from page 12) experience), if entrances to trails are blocked off, the spectators will simply find a way around. Somehow they will get the course. The result will be that riders will be on the course, on private property, and on unau thorized trails in the State Forest to the obvious disadvantage of all the carefully built relationships that the trail rider organization has established over the years. Bob has suggested that sPectator routes for trail riders be worked out that will be interesting and will not get the riders in to trouble. It's good sense, .it's good psychology, and it's been ignored. (3.) In the European ISOT's the roads arc closed and the contestants can go as fast as they like. Here that's not possible. The roads will be open and any little old lady with a six-year-old Oldsmobile can bumble along on them. Bob says a serious effort to educate the foreign riders to the traffic laws and the consequences of not obeying them should be made. Again his suggestion is being ignored. The contestants will be told the rules and there will probably be a speed trap somewhere along the course. Frankly, I don't even want to think about the consequences of some New England cop' trying to stop a non-English-speaking Trophy team rider on a 90 MPH MZ. Wars have started in ,less volatile surroundings. A woman spectator was killed in an enduro last week under just these conditions. Bob Hicks has done quite a little shouting about these items. He points out that the AMA and ISOT will be there for a week but he's got to live there (and try to explain their actio~s) for the rest of his life. It's a damn good point. There is no reason why motorcyclists who live in New England should have anything but pride in the fact that America's first ISOT was held in their part of the country. But the way it's going, that might not be the case. Because of the noise Bob has made about these items, some of the environmen tal groups have beco~e aware of the problems and have started doing a bit of obstructing on their own. They have so far forced the generation of some sort of environmental impact statement. There has been no serious talk - so far - of an injunction or any such action, and Bob says, "I expect they'll muddle through in the time-honored tradition of the AMA." He isn't and hasn't tried to stop the ISOT, but he does wish they would evidence a little more concern for his home territory. While we're on the subject of rumors, let's squelch one before it gets started. John Pen ton resigned from the Executive Committee of the AMA last week. AU things considered, it might be reasonable to think that he was displeased over the. preparations for the ISOT, but this is not the case. He is unhappy with the AMA but not over th e I SOT. The timing was just coincidence, says John. His real reason for r~signing? "No comment," says John. But when you mention the name of Cycle News' publisher Sharon Clayton, there's a distant sizzling noise in the background. '0 N ~ « '" ~ w THE ROAD RACE WINNERS Z W ..J (.) > (.)
