A fter six mon ths of Point gathering to qualify, much practice and preparation, some of the top billclimbers in eigh t classes me t to figh t it out against each other and the dusty, rocky hill. There were predictable and surprise wins, but above all, there was excitement. Young Bob Dahlin of Hacienda Heights took cbarge in the 125 class, a class that has previously been dominated by Dave Powell of Costa Mesa. Young Powell had to settle for second place this time. Winner in the 175 class was Brent Coffey of Oak View. Another "Yankee" winner was Frank Duroso from San Jose, Frank walked off with the honors in the 250 class. This win was expected to go to Doug Hall and his super-mo,dified Bultaco. Hall just happens to be part owner of De Anza . and designer of the mighty hill. He gave Durso a run for his money, but had to settle for second place. Durso also made a good showing in the Open class aboard his big Harley. Jim Hoggard, Jr., also of Oak View, proved himself another Yankee invader by taking over in the 360 class. The uPowt:rful" Peterson clan was wen represented wi th Kerry Peterson claiming the trophy for the 400 class and brother Clyde, making off with the prize in the 500 class. Ron Saffel of Orange left competitors in the dust, as he and his 6!>O Triumph romped away with the honors in 'that division. Much to the surprise of almost no one, eaI Mackel of Tustin, walked off with a first in the open class. His 750 Triumph, winner of this year's Widowmaker Hillclimb. carried the lanky Ntal to yet another victory at De Anza. At the end of the run waited the cold refreshments, the horiors and the beautiful big trophies presented to each first pia"" winner. Rocky road.
