.. M N CMC Carlsbad I Pennzoil users sweep Inter-AMA Serie's! By John Bethea CARLSBAD, CAL.,JULY 29 Tim Lunde's bid for a week-long CMC 125 Expert sweep ended in the final round today when his Penton tossed a flywheel and blew the sidecase while running second here at Carlsbad Raceway. Second was all he needed to win overall and he had it secured while running behind Marty Smith (Mnk), who failed to finish the first moto due to countershaft sprocket problems. His closest rival was Penton-teammate Ray Lopez in third. Had he won, it would have been the first time in CMC history that a rider had scored such a sweep. When the incident occurred, rigbt in front of the scoring towet, Lopez took over the overall lead a full eigh t seconds behind Smith in the moto. Ray took second to Lunde in round one. The race began as the toughest battle of the day. Scurrying away from the rest of the pack, Lunde and Lopez took tums exchanging the lead, with Smith tucked neatly 15-yards back in third. It went that way about four laps over the International GP course when suddenly Marty got the drive and passed them both. For two more laps they remained as tight as can be, then Smith began to slowly creep away while Lopez just as slowly dropped off the' pace. Then Lunde's problem occurred, and the en tire "preview of the 125 GP in Missouri" evaporated. Lopez won overall with Lunde, dropping ou t in eighth, taking second. Bob Maxwell (Pen) took a pair of thirds to third oveJ;31l with Smith fourth. Team Husky rider Billy Clements tried for a two-class win, but a spill while running fourth on the first lap of the second 250 stopped it cold. He remounted in last place and rode the nex t eigh t laps in frenzied, WFO fashion, working back to fourth. By that point he must have seen it was rather hopeless so he cooled it slightly to save strength for the 500. In the first moto he and Marty Moates (CZ) had a wild race before Marty had troubles on the hill and finished second. Marty broke to the lead in the final and breathed a lot easier when Clements went down. Marty'was never headed and ran away to the easy win and first overall, his first as a CMC Expert. What he failed to do in the 250, Clements more than made up for in the 500 by winning' both ends of the class hands·down over Mike Yorba. It was one of Mike's best rides ever, which is really amazing since his wife is expecting a child any minute already two months overdue. Rick Hachey (Suz) straddled the starting gate for the first time as a CMC Intermediate in the 125 clss and had a hard time in the first moto, fmishing 14th. The butterflies disappeared quickly, though, as he finished the day with two thirds for third overall behind Jim Felton (Pen) and Steve Bartley, who took turns taking first and second. Geoff Howe (Hus) won the 250's and Bill Shepard (CZ) the 500's. Only two Jun.iors- completed a three moto sweep of their classes. Curt Skinner (Suz) did it in the 125 Div. I and Charles Dickenson (CZ) in the 500s. Other winners included: Rudy Sayers (IOO-Hod),. Mark Jeffari (125 I-Suz), Jerry Armstrong (250 l-CZ), and Jack McCormick (250 IT.Yam). ..~ g « ~ w 2 w ..J (.) > (.)
