Stars like Bill Payne, Ken Zahrt, Jim West, Jeff Vidic, Rex Staten, Danny LaPorte, and 'Eddie Cole set the scene for the American CMC Ascot Motocross Enterprises $1000 purse race at Indian Dunes Sunday. For the North-South Challenge, there were several top racers who traveled from around the Santa Maria area including Joe Cushaway and Shennan Schneller, but in comparison to the South's guns there was no real challenge. LaPorte had a rev tuned Mettco Penton. taPorte cleaned up the usual Cole monopoly and took a second with two first for the overall dough above Cole and Ken Zahrt from Bay Area Bultaco. True racers from near all top shops crowded the starting gate in the 250 Seniors as $107 winner Jeff Vidic shoved ahead of Bill Payne and Zahrt. I n the 500 Seniors American Motocross racer Rex Staten was in the money until his back wheel hook-up screwed·up in the last moto. Bill Payne who was decreasing speed in the third moto from a long day of racing, victored this class and socked it to runner-up finishers Ken Zahrt famed Jim West on a Hatevama. By John Bethea GARDENA, CAL.,JULY 25 Tim Lunde and Ray Lopez thrilled the largest CMC nighttime crowd ever tonight at Ascot Park by exchanging leads 10 times in the five-lap final moto, and it resulted in the winner being determined only in the final rew feet. Lunde (Pen) won the first moto and Lopez (Pen), the second, to set the stage for the finale. From the drop of the gate the two 125cc Experts started riding side-by-side. Tim led after the first lap, bu t at this poin t the passing began. Swapping tjle point back and forth, the evenly-matched pair concluded with lap' two in position of Lopez. Back came Lunde to claim lap three and back came Lopez to claim lap four. Lunde moved alongside, pulled a wheel ahead, then Lopez shut the gate. Two turns from the end, Ray still held the head honcho spot, but Tim got the drive off the soft jump in the dash for the checkered, squirmed alongside and pulled it out by a few inches at the flag. It was the second week, in a row Tim had topped Ray in this class. _ Dave Pessy closed to within one win of the all-time CMC Ascot 250cc Expert Career win record of 19 held by Tim Hart. This means that Wednesday night, Dave is out to tie the recora. Mark Tyer's CZ followed Pessy's Ossa for second place, point-wise far ahead of Maico's Billy Payne, whose bad final moto made the difference. Payne also had a bad second 500cc m'oto and that forced him to third overall in that class, too. Joe Scotland, who had neve,r won a 500 Expert overall here, topped the first and added two seconds to his perfonnance to gamer the top spot ahead of secondmoto winner Bill Rubl)', Maico and CZ mounted respectively. CMC Point leader Randy Myers guided his Bultaco to a fifth in the 250 class, upping his total to 1424 while Nelson Whitehill's 13th in the 125's dropped him a few more poin ts behind in second at 1267. Dave Eropkin, riding his Bultaco for the first time as a 125 Expert, managed only 17th, but it was good enough to move him into the four-figure group at 1001 and fourth in the standings behind presently-without-a-ride Mark Anderson (1026). Tim Lunde is in sixth and closing at 985. Pat Mulvihill (CZ) scored the 500 Intermediate win in a sweept against four other riders while his counter-part winners Martyn Widgery and Don Jensen each saw one moto flag ou t of flI'St. Jeff Jennings scored the win over Widgery in round one of the 250's and Jenson slipped to fifth in round two of the 125's. The winner-take-all style of finals were needed to determine the 100,125 and 250 Juniors and in those Louis Morrison (Hon), Steve Tiete (Yam) and Rick Anaya (CZ) received the wins. John Fry (Yamaha) played second to Mike McDonald (Mai) in the first pair of 500 Junior motos, but won the fmal and with it the overall as Mike dipped to a misfortunate lOth. In the minis, 11 year-old Tim Ochoa staged a sweep and copped three-time' second-place finisher Rick Bruhan'ski. CMC Irwindale By John Bethea IRWINDALE, CAL., JULY 27 Tim Lunde was at it again tonight. The Penton rider from Redondo Beach made it three overall wins in as many nights by topping the 125 Experts with two wins. Bruce McDougal (Pen) was his closest rival in with two seconds and a third while Ray Lopez (Pen) could only gamer third with a fourth, third and second The win puts him into fourth place in the CMC Point Standings, just one shy of Mark Anderson's 1026 total. Dave Pessy and Tim's brother, Chuck, took turns' winning the 250's with Dave on top at the end with the mosL Lunde could only get a second and fourth to add to his final race first. Danny McK~e (Mon) was third. It's been a long time since Jim West (Hus) appeared in a CMC nighttime winner's circle, bu t he did it tonight by defeating the hot Joe Scotland in the 500's. His bid for a sweep ended in the second moto when eventual third overall Joe.J ohnston (Hus) won. Tag Turner (Pen) swept the 125 Intennediates while Ted Hamner (Yam) and Buttons Saddler (CZ) took the 250's and 500's respectively. In Junior Final showdowns, Joe Aragon notched the 100 win, Dale Denning (Pen) the 125 and Steven Potts (eZ) the 250. Mark Lawrence (Yam) had a 3-1-1 tally to top the Minis and Tom Lansford (CZ) aced the 500 Final.
