Ravvhide Trials
By Ronald Szilagyi
EL lORE, CAL.,JULY 29
Imagine a steep mountainside,
strewn with boulders and rock
out-cropings, difficult enough for
a man to walk around; and then
picture a trials Master ·working a band
polished motorcycle up .over and
through without putting his foot down.
This is trials, as demonstrated by
Marland Whaley in his first place in the
Master class. Second, one point behind
Marland, was Berme Schrieber..Trials is
not a race. Racing involves a fast start
and staying out front. This is not so in
trials; the rider is entered in a form of
competition which involves strictly
himself and his individual performance
on a motorcycle.
Martin Bdair was soaking his feet
when he said, "I completed the last two
loops in one bour and fifteen minu tes."
the first two loops took him two bours
and 45 minutes.
Tbe heat was overpowering. I even
saw one motocross rider cooling his
Honda in a mud puddle, by splashing
the muddy water over the engine.
Each loop was five miles long. The
Novice class had two loops, the
Amateurs had three, the Experts also
three, and the Masters four. The Novice
and Beginners had eight sections, and
the Amateurs seven. Both of these
classes covered the same ground. There
was a good assortment of roc Its, and
rock.. ravines, good ups and downs,
entries and exits, a hiU climb with lots
of switcb backes,. and good useful
terrain between sections.
A happy note for Dicit Gleason, he
rode his last event as a Amateur, he won
his event and transfered to Expert.
Steve Graham, an Expert, received
three more transfer points in his class
win. This gives !iteve 7 points toward
the 20 points required to 'transfer to
Master. This makes two wins in a row
for Steve.
Th e kids certainly tried hard,
problems wi th sbut off gas valves even
plague the kids. In the less than !OOcc,
D. Bernard (Bul taco) won the B
Division. The Division A, !OOcc and
over class, was won by Kirk Grissom on
his Steens.
