Fast Junior time went to the bright maroon N orton of Rex Barratt. Once again the Novices were here in droves to make up six Novice heats. For the first' time . in many weeks there wasn't a single restart as the Novices showed that they can run hard withou t falling down. The first heat went to Skip Aksland on his Yamaha, followed by J. Hannon on a Bultaco and Henry Conklin on a Kawasaki. This proved to be the fastest of the six heats with a [me lap time of 2:01. 79, a full second faster than any of the other heats. Chuck Soderstrom won the only direct transfer in his heat, sending Randy Roderick and Denny Briggs to the semi. With the third heat being the fourth fastest only the Ilfst place rider, Randy Miller would make the main event. With so many Novice heats, only the Irrst rider in each heat gets a direct transfer. This means that the second and third rider from the four fastest heats go to the semi main. Pat Evans won the fourth heat, sending Jeff Davidson and John Allison to the semi.. Evans put together one helluva ride, since he started from the third row penalty line after misjudging the starter. The fifth heat went to Brad Holt on a Kawasaki, followed by the Yamahas of Harold Raggio and Scott MarshalL The final Novice heat had a young rider who stayed in California after Laguna Seca last week so he could ride the famous Ascot half mile. John Gleason, Harrisburg, North Carolina, didn't made thc main bu t rode a good heat race just the same. Don Frauenberger got the only transfer to the main. ~ The first Junior{Expert heat wen t to fast qualifier Tom Rockwood, with second ROing to Junior short track ace • John Gennai. Third and fourth went to John Hateley and Charlie Theilke for a chance to make the main by way of the semi.. The second heat was won by another short track ace Rick Hocking, who is the current Ascot point leader. Second wen.t to Junior Rob Morrison, third to Expert Brian La Plante and fourth to yet another Junior, Devon Sowell. DeWayne Keeter, the current Ascot poin t leader, won the third heat followed by rookie Expert Larry Gino, then Juniors Tony Dell and Bob Sanders. The fourth and final heat was the fastest with Danny Hockie picking up the win followed by Guy Bailey, Rex Barratt, and John Sperry. The Novice semi was won by BuItaco mounted Jeff Davidson with Randy Roderick running second. Third and fourth wen t to Scott Marshall and Henry Conklin respec tively. The combined J unior{Expert semi saw only one of the three Experts transfer to the main. John Hateley, the veteran won ou t over Juniors Rex Barratt, Bob Sanders, and Devon Sowell. Brian La Plan te qualified second fastest bu t was not out fpr the trophy dash. John Hateley came out and proceeded to win the dash, with Rex Barratt takinl[ second, DeWayne Keeter ~ got third and Tom Rockwood taking fo.urth after dropping out with mechanical troubles. The Novice main was a one-two-three Yamaha win with Skip Aksland, Chuck Soderstrom and Randy Miller. Jeff Davidson's Bultaco, the only one in the line-up, took fourth. Fifth went to Brad Holt followed by Randy Roderick, Scott Marshall, Pat Evans, Don Frauenberger, and John Amson. The main even t was destined to be an exciting race from the green flag. Junior Rick Hocking took off to an early lead with he and DeWayne Keeter swapping position no less than three times in the first lap. Hocking started to pull away from Keeter as the Harley started missing on lap four. Starting next to last, John Hateley pushed his Triumph out to the high groove, and squaring off the comers moved to fourth place by lap nine. In the next lap Danny Hockie passed Keeter's sick Harley as did Hateley. Hateley went high into the south tum and shot past Hockie. By the time the white flag came out Hateley was putting the pressure on Hocking. Out came the checkers and Hateley nabbed the win folrowed by Hocking, Danny Hockie, Randy Bailey and DeWayne Keeter. Next week in addition to exciting half mile racing there will also be some added attractions. There will be sidehacks on the IT course, Rod Pack, aerial dare devil, and Ron Walker doing his flaming auto acrobatics. RESULTS NOVICE MAIN' 1. Skip Aksland (Vam). 2. Chuck Soderstrom (Yam). 3.
