At the National ROad Races, Enduros, Dirt Tracks, Mota-cross, \ as well as th~ nation's turnpikes and cow-trails! Enjoy cat·like traction, on and off·the·road, with "boll·on" KONI shocks. KONls give you that extra control, stability and comfort at any speed o',er all types of terrain. Only KONl's competition tested and proven shocks offer a patented adjusting feature, in addition to spring pre·load, that permits the owner of any type of bike a "custom· ized" ride. , " ':, w-·.. ",. II Fo, mform.tloll WrIt. member of Spokebenders M.C., Jack Hurley, indicating all the flat tires and bent rims litering the Spokebenders sign-up area. . The Bell Mountain/Stoddard Wells area is notorious for its rocks, and both courses (actually all four if you count the Novice courses) had their fair share of hard spots, but surprisingly, riders seemed to be happy with the courses. Mitch Mayes is extremely happy, having won both sides of the Heavyweight battle. On the Spokeb~.nders side of the go-round Jim Fishback, riding a 400cc CZ, again grabbed the lead by the bomb and was really making tracks with Mayes hot on his heels. Fishback mis·timed the hill on the second lap and Mayes dived into the opening. The pair provided the only real racing of the day. Mayes kept his Husky in frorit and Fishback was hard on his heels, trying to get the lead back. Mayes and Fishback flashed under the checkered flag with only a few feet separating them. , Speculation may come to an end over whether Cordis or Tom Brooks is the better rider as Cordis showed up in the Division II Ligh tweigh t class today mounted on a 175 Bultaco and proceeded to stomp all over everybody, finishirig the Spokebenders first race of the day so far in the lead that it was almost obscene. Brother Tom suffered bike problems, most likely in the form of the very popular flat tire, and retired for the day. If Cordis remains in the Division II class we may see some very exciting racing as the brothers meet head-on. Larry Roeseler finally came out of his slump, and after having so many problems that he wasn't even ahle to race the fIrst Trailbike go-round, came back and took his Baja, sans air cleaner, to an easy victory on the Spokebenders course. Larry has been plagued with bike problems for the. past few weeks and today was riding last year's mount, apparently needing time to sort out the difficulties on his new mount, which has been seizing with monotonous regularity. Garry Conner (DKW) is back after an absence (at the lmish line, that is) of who knows how long, and did well with a second place. Bob Rutten knocked huge gaps in his rear rim and when last seen, just before the start of the Spokebenders race, was trying to knock his little brother off his bike so he could race. Larry better 'keep an eye on Rutten. The name isn't familiar, but in the four races since he transfered to Expert, Bob has had three lll'sts and a third. Maybe he is the lad who will put Hodaka back on the top of the Trailbike heap. It sure was good to see Tom Poteet back out. Doug Winchell took an early lead in the Spokebenders 250cc go-round with Larry Pfutzenreuter right on his tail as the three Bultacos moved out of sight over the hill. Poteet's Bul was the lll'st one to come around the first lap, Winchell having lost the course and Pfutzcnreuter dropping out with a flat rear tire. Poteet appeared to be just motoring around, but he finished a quite respectable distance ahead of second place Dave Lapraik (AjS) and Elsinore mounted Wayne Cook. Probably the best part of the weekend for many pe9ple was the Spokebenders annual Bota Bag Contest. This year, setting a new record for the wine drinking contest was a Prospector, who shall remain nameless in the interest of preserving his marriage. (No, it wasn't Jack Lund. He was disqualified before the start due to his professional status.) This stalwart fellow managed a phenomenal five minutes 56 seconds under the bag without once coming up for air. Utterly amazing. By Alice Rhea Prospectors At 8:00 AM the first 45· minute, three lap race was off and running. I motored on over to the Expert/ Amateur course to check it out. The third check was located on a small hill abou t a mile ou t from the', finish. I noticed why they call this area rock city. Lots and lots of bad, bad rocks. Just before check three was a particularly nasty section with cross grain ruts filled with those previously mentioned obstacles. I felt this was going to be one of the worst sections on lI'~ For FREE descnpllve KONI brochure, applicatIon cha'rt and prlce list wnte BIKONI LIMITED 158 Green Street, Hackensack, N.
