A HOT COOLER AND AQUICK STOPPER. got CIl ~ z w -' U > U Mike Devlin rode smoothly for second. agreed that Mike Clarke, Denny Varnes, Bill LaBrie, Scott Brelsford and Tim Rockwood all did well. In the second Junior heat Mike Devlin (Yam), John Green (Kaw) and Pat Hennen (Suz) moved to the front, with Devlin edging away in the lead. Green . and Hennen diced for second until Green moved his Kawasaki out ahead. Neither had a real shot at catching Devlin. Art Bemheisel was fourth on his Harley-Davidson, followed by Wade Killen (Kaw) , Rick Hocking (Yam) and L. A. Fitch (Yam). Devlin averaged 88.4MPH. Bill LaBrie jumped out front at the start of the 50-mile Junior final, with Mike Devlin close after him. John Long got another moderate start but was quickly on the pipe in pursuit of Devlin. John Green (Kaw) was running third, just ahead of Denny Varnes. Within four laps Varnes was righ t on Green and, farther in front, Long was pressuring Devlin for second place. Long was by on the next lap, and had closed to within five seconds of LaBrie. Vames then passed Green for fourth spot. Mike Clarke (Yam) was the next man to get by Green, and Scott Brelsford also moved up to join the contest for fourth position. Rudy Galindo (Yam) pulled into the pits with an ailing bike. Long was gaining one second per lap on LaBrie as the race neared the halfway mark. Devlin was holding the pace in third, five seconds behind. Varnes had pulled away from the congestion to establish himself in fourth, as Green held on to a slight advantage over Clarke in fifth. Pat Hennen (Suz) had moved up to race with Brelsford: A few laps later Clarke had gone hy Green, Hennen was around Brelsford and Long had tightened up on LaBrie. Their machines appeared to be equally matched on the straightaway. Bob Endicott (Hon) had been moving swiftly through the pack, but lost it exiting turn 7 and slid into the dirt. Buzz Buzzellj was right behind him and also crashed trying to avoid contact. Neither rider was seriously injured. Long moved around LaBrie in the closing laps, and LaBrie hung tight until he crashed trying to regain the lead. This put Devlin into second place. Denny Varnes moved up to challenge the now third and fourth placers Clarke and Green, but couldn't get by. Pat Hennen . finished sixth, followed by Brelsford, Pat Evans (Yam) and Tim Rockwood (Yam), who had run near the front in the early laps. Rick Hocking (Yam) was tenth.
