The former Arizona rider, who now
lives in Southern California, lost his
Heat race Friday night but came back to
take the Trophy' Dash and a victory in
the 15 lap Final for the first time this
year.
•
Like many of the Ascot rookies each
year, LaPlante found the going rough
early this season. Mechanical troubles-,
over-riding spills that cost him money
and the usual first year mistakes kept
him from the limelight.
But Friday night Brian came into his
own on the Bob. Donabedian Triumph
and pu t together two near perfect rides
in the Dash and Final to come up the
winner. He clocked the third fastest time trial
behind Terry Dorsch and Tom
Rockwood. But, it was a second place in
the Heat behind Rex Barratt. In the
Dash it was Bingo over Rob Morrison,
Dorsch and Rockwood..
Barratt led the first lap of the Final
but gave way to the fast improving
Morrison on lap two. Rob kept the
Nor!on in front until lap seven, when
LaPlante took over. Morrison dropped
out on the next lap with engine
troubles.
Barratt also turned in his best ride of
the season, and held a frrm second all
the way to the finish. Mike Renslow
made i, one-three for Triumph, with his
most impressive au ting this season.
Point leader, DeWaune Keeter, had a
long night With a fourth in the Heat,
second in the Semi and an eventual
fourth in tb..e.... Final Dorsch and
Rockwood rounded au t the rest of the
fron t runners.
Chuck Soderstrom, the latest in the
long line of new Novice winners, made
it win number two on the season. Chuck
raced his Yamaha in for the Heat win
and then did a repeat in the Final. Both
rides were near perfect.
Another name that keeps climbing
higher each week in the Iigh tweigh t
division is Scott Marshall. This week it
was a Heat race win and a strong second
in the Final.
Debbie Reon crashed for the second
straight week. Last week it was in the
Main event. This time it was a front row
start in the Heat and an early bail off,
again in the south tUrn in nearly the
identical spot from the previous week.
