It was a record number of riden who hit the mark with six ,Experts and four junion timing into the twenty- two s. Tom Rockwood broke out a new Triumph and led the parade with a 22 :48. Rcx Barratt was the quick junior at 22:76. Bu t it was just a preview of things to come during the, event that has becomc an annual non-national "biggie " at Ascot. Dave Aldana, the third fastest qualifier, topped DeWayne Keeter and Mert Lawwill to win the opening heat race. John HateIey turned back Gene Romero and Brian LaPlan te in the second ou ling. The Expert Semi-Main event was a mob scene for the last transfer to the cup Final, with seven riders bidding for the four transfers on the last lap. Terry Dorsch won the race with teammate Rockwood passing three riden on the last lap to take fourth. Tom Horton and Eddie Wirth ran second and third in the blanket finish that eliminated Oregon's Randy Scott. The four rider Trophy Dash featured the fastest lineup ever with Aldana taking his se~ond win of the nigh t, topping Rockwood, who held off Romero right at the line for second. Wirth finished fourth. The Main event was an Aldana-Norton, Keeter·Harley run in the opening laps. Aldana was the defending champ and ran hot from the opening lap on his factory Norton. Keeter, the Ascot po in t leader had hi. hands full trying to catch Dave and still bold off john Hateley, Gene Romero and Rockwood. A t the finish it was Aldana for the second straight year and a new track record to go with the Gold Cup from the city of Gardena. The new mark broke a year and a half <;lId record set by Mert Lawwill. Mert finished seventh in this on.e. It was the first time that Norton has added its name to the Ascot track records for a competition event. All of Ascot's fine Juniors were also on hand with a record four in time trials. Pre·heat favorites Danny Hoclde, Rick Hocking and John Gennai all came through to win their heat races, giving the Yamaha brand a sweep for openers. Rob Morrison squeezed his Norton to the front in the tll'st lap of the final, but lost the lead to Hocking on lap two. Morrison then pushed Hocking all the way to the finish and a new track record in the YeDow Plate division.
